View Full Version : Say someone abandoned an 85+ TPI Z28 infront of your house

Would you have it towed or would you strip it?
Arctic WS6

Abandoned? If you know for a FACT it is abandoned and its on your property, I'd strip the hell out of it as fast as I could, hide all the parts in my house and take the rest to a salvage yard after making it unrecognizable. Then you don't have to worry about it haunting you. Are you sure someone didn't just run out of gas? Let it sit for awhile and see if it goes somewhere first. If not, consider it a birthday present. :D

I'd try and find out who owns it, then call em and ask if I could buy it for maybe $500 or so. Then I'd strip what I wanted out of it, and sell the rest to a junkyard or something like that.
Polar Bear
06-26-2001, 04:07 PM
I'd swap my drivers side front fender, drivers side small spoiler, pass.side ground FX.
(conversation with the Z28 owner)
No, I don't know why someone would just come by and paint those parts yellow. ;) Yes, I do have a yellow 85 Z28.. but I'm not following your reasoning. :D
Jason91Z
06-26-2001, 04:14 PM
It's been sitting there for close to 2 weeks now. The neighbors have already punctured all 4 tires, stole the radio, popped the hood with a sawzall, and stole the battery. If I stripped it I'd use everything on the 83 Z28 body I have in storage.

I wouldn't strip it in the street. I'd push it up to my driveway (a few feet) and then drag it into my garage with the winch on my GMC 2500 and strip it in there.

06-26-2001, 07:51 PM
Don't put words in my mouth Jay. You don't have a fucking clue what I would do. It probably is stolen. But its already been torn apart, sitting for two weeks while other people break in and tear shit up. Might as well salvage what is left whie he still can. The owner has most likely already collected insurance on it as it is.

Oh good lord don't tell me you're really stealing shit? Ok.. if you get busted you aren't gonna get tagged with just taking a few parts.. they are going to look at it like you TOOK the car and stripped it.. you want grand theft on your record?
Jesus christ put it back on the street tell the cops you did touch it cause they will find your prints, say you were snooping around for owner information or something.. don't be in possession of stolen shit.. it's just not worth it! :(

Just got back from dumping what was left of it. We stripped it pretty damn good. We got the nose piece, the gfx, the fenders, the doors, the rear bumper cover, the tail lights, the tail panel, the passenger side quarter panel, the hatch, the windshield, the seats, the dash pad, the trans, the TPI 305, and the computer minus wiring. I wanted to get the rearend too but then we wouldn't have been able to get the car out of the garage.
I would bet money that shit is stolen
I don't know about that. It had no vin but it wasn't hotwired and it had no broken glass or popped locks.
Ok.. if you get busted you aren't gonna get tagged with just taking a few parts.. they are going to look at it like you TOOK the car and stripped it..
I knew that.

Now I know you know what you're talking about, being a law man and all, but where I am at least there is no way he could be charged with Grand Theft Auto. You have to be caught in the act of stealing the car for that to happen. All he'd get where I live is possession of stolen property, a fine and probation at most.
Even when they do catch petty car theifs they don't even investigate. They just slap 'em with whatever fines or charges that they can make stick with out a messy trial. They have more important things to do <-- Cops words, not mine. Sure, potentially he's setting himself up for trouble, but in the real world if you didn't kill someone or you don't have a lengthy criminal record already, you'll get off with a slap on the wrist.
This of course is all derived from my personal experiences only. I'm not edjumicated in those ways.
On another note, personally I would have tried to contact the owner. Did you check the engine block for the VIN number there?

So if someone stole your car took it for a joyride and parked it, you wouldnt mind people taking shit from it? And he did steal it, dumbass, he removed it from of the street and put it in his garage and stole parts off of it. Even though he probobly wont get caught , him and his piece of shit neighbors now know that they are each thieves. They are no different from the idiots that strip cars everyday.

Yep, I'm a piece of shit for not giving a flying fuck if this guy takes parts off of a car that has been sitting in front of his house for two weeks. Look, rim job, somebody else may, or may not, have stolen the car and left it there (how do you know the fucking thing didn't die right there and the owner just got fed up left it?), but, if it's been there for that long and nobody has come to claim it (including the police), then fuck it. Whether he takes the parts or not, the goddamn thing is going to the junk yard. Period.

Great logic there , "its been here for two weeks so its fair game" . So instead of getting back a stolen car that may have a little damage because someone calls the cops and says "there has been a car parked here for two weeks it may be stolen you might check it out" , they get a fucked up car back because lowlifes see it as a chance to get what they want. An yet you still manage to be funny. How do you do it?
I'm sure my parents find it heart wrenching that I don't care about the stripping of an abandoned POS. Tell ya what, evil, if I ever leave my car in front of your house for 2 weeks or more, you have my permission to strip it (keep in mind, I'm not trying to open up the 'your car is a POS anyway' angle for you).
Oh, I almost forgot,, so you know I'm giving you shit.
Funny and serious all in the same time. I would be so mad if my casr was stolen, ditched and then stripped by someone just because it was sitting in front of his house for a while. I would have done the honorable thing and called the cops and have a chance for the origional owner to claim it. Then offer him $500.oo for it if he no longer wants it. If no one claims it I'd wait and buy it at auction for $100.00 and then strip it.
Even if this thing had been beaten and stripped I think I'd still want to know about it. I'd wan't it back, especially if it were my Berly. Sentimental reasons I guess...
I just hope that cops weren't baiting you and watching that thing... :p

For me (and the law), if you do not own it, you have no right touching it.. period.
Time isn't a factor here, even if a car is going to be hauled off as scrap and the parts wasted, it's still not yours, those scrap parts are still the original owners.. and it is stealing.
What if the Owner just got fed up with it and left it there? Unless he gave you permission to strip it.. it changes nothing, it is still not yours to touch.
There is no grey area here.
It is either yours or it isn't.. end of story.
hmmmm....
I wonder if all the vehicle codes, even the ones on the frame were ground off if you could just put an add in the paper: "Found 1 gutted car frame, call and give description to reclaim." If no one calls about their lost property I think the law says 30 days after public notice and you can legally claim it as yours. :D

Yeah, Max, I'd like to know where you came from also, just out of curiosity.
And although I do not find it shocking that someone would actually do this in this day and age, I still think it's totally wrong. Not only for whomever owned the car, but for yourself. I, like many others would be fucking pissed off if my car were stolen, or was broken down in a somewhat safe place (residential area), and some jackoff yanked it into his garage and stripped all the shit off of it. Like Polar Bear said, there is no grey area in this matter.
Secondly, I've found that this shit will come back to haunt you in some way in the future. Maybe someone not involved in the stripping of the car saw you and your friends pulling the car into your garage, and then saw a totally stripped frame come out and back into the street. They just might decide to have a little talk with the police about that. There's snoops everywhere, you never know who's watching you.
There's always a correct way of going about things so that loose ends are tied neatly, and this wasn't one of those ways, if you did indeed do this.

I disagree. Personally, I am the type of person that will take advantadge of a situation if it presents itself. If someone left a car like that in front of my house, I would strip it too. The reason? BECAUSE I CAN.
If it turns out some poor fuck ran out of gas then thats too bad... he should have thought ahead or atleast come back to get his car. Of course, this is unlikely... the most likely situation (if this story is even true) is that it was stolen, taken for a joyride, and dumped in front of his house (somewhat coincidental that it was in front of someone's house who could have a use for those parts, but hey, it could happen so I wont say that it didnt). If it was stolen, then who cares... itll go to a junkyard. May as well take the parts now & not have to pay.
Like I said before, if it benefits you, take advantadge of it... don't get hung up on wether you should or not... all you need to do is ask yourself... do you want these parts?
you can have them... if you want them, then TAKE THEM!
why? Because you can. I fully support the decision to take the parts.

I think there is a lot more to this than you guys are seeing. First off, what kind of area do you live in Jason? Do cars normally get left in the street for long periods of time? Is it in the street or parked out in the grass on the side of the road? Was it pulled over to the side or ditched? Was it locked?
If the car was stolen guys, it would have been stripped already. You guys know that. Unless there was a big stereo in there that is missing now, that car was probably just junked out on the side of the road where the owner or whoever had posession of it at the time decided to dump it. What kind of condition was it in? Beat up shape, missing paint, lots of rust? Or was it in good shape? How did the tires and wheels look? Were they the stock wheels or were they wheels people who had stolen it stuck on there so they could move the car?
Also, if you have your car break down in front of someones home, and you leave it for two weeks, and don't tell the owner that your car is on their property, you are an idiot.

Yes... I had full coverage on my Z-28. When the brakes failed in the rain & it crashed, I got full value ($3600) for the car, even though I had only paid $1900 for it when I bought it.
My BMW is insured for it's full value ($5200) while I only paid $2600 for it. If someone stole it, I wouldn't mind if anyone else stripped it clean, no matter how much I like the car cuz I would have doubled my money.
As far as this stripping procedure being done the wrong way, yes! It should have been done WAY late at night (if this is not complete BS) and the car should have been hauled off to somewhere else afterwards.
SillyWabbit
06-27-2001, 02:40 PM
If the car is on the street, then it's not on the home owner's property. It's city property. Although the home owners can call the police and report that a vehicle has been abandoned in front of their house, the street is still not their property. And there are no extenuating (sp?) circumstances here. If the car is not his, then it is not his to strip parts off of. If the owner left it there for 2 weeks, then call the police, and have them take it away, or put out a public notice. No matter what rationale you come up with to make the actions acceptable, they never will be. Why? Because, unless he had the pink slip lying around in his house somewhere, it wasn't his property.

I'm not a TOTAL shithead. Thats my point. I'll take advantage of any situation that benefits me.
To me, a TOTAL shithead is someone who takes advantage of a situation with the sole intent of fucking up someone else with no personal gain.
For instance, someone who keys your car is a total shithead.

Som of these pathetic attempts to justify stripping a car are just hilarious.
What kind of condition was it in? Beat up shape, missing paint, lots of rust? Or was it in good shape? How did the tires and wheels look? Were they the stock wheels or were they wheels people who had stolen it stuck on there so they could move the car?
It was a beat up rusty shitbox, thats why he went to all the trouble of stripping it of its beat up rusty parts.

it all depends, if its well taken care of, i would leave it alone and watch out for it... if its in ruff shape, its been their a few days, and i can tell the owner dosent care much about it, then i would strip it late one night.... The smart thing to do would be not to strip it, becaus it could be stolen, and if cops find the car infront of your house stripped, then find the stripped parts in on your property your screwed unless your very careful...

One more thing...
If the car was stolen guys, it would have been stripped already.
Not every car thief steals cars to strip them for parts.
More often than not its just for a joyride.

This is all BS anyway. Look at the times, the car was completely stripped and dumped in about 3 hours.
You are such a jackass. What would I have to gain by making this up? It only took 3 hours cause I had 3 friends helping me and we used mostly air tools.

what would you have to gain?
maybe you were bored at work & wanted to spark conversation... I'm not saying you would do it, or that you did... but I would, so I'm just saying it possible.
what do you have to gain from claiming your car is worth $12,000?
maybe trying to prove a point, I dunno.

I don't see why everyone is getting so upset over this. The car was sitting infront of my house for 2 whole weeks. My neighbors were already taking shit off of it. If I just left it alone it still would have got stripped. And if whoever owned gave a flying shit about it they would have picked it up 2 weeks ago.

Exactly. SOMEONE was going to end up with those parts, so it may as well have been you. You would have been a fool NOT to take them when you could cuz you obviously wanted them.

Kamaro, aren't you in law enforcement of some type? If so, then as a member of the LA County Sheriff's Department, I am ashamed to have you as a member of the law enforcement team and family.
As for the rest of you who think it totally acceptable to strip a car that isn't even yours without going through due process to obtain the right to the car, I am frankly glad you exist. You see, for members of law enforcement like myself, having plenty of idiots like yourselves in the world gives me job security. Thank you and say hello to Bubba for me when you meet him.

You're a cop in LA and you're ashamed of Kamaro? Seems like you'd have much, much more than that to be ashamed of.

I didn't think cops would take shots at eachother like that. But then again, every cop I have met in person has been a complete and utter asshole. Even the ones that were supposed to be "helping" me.

What exactly is there to be ashamed of? I like what I do. I think busting people of minimal intelligence like yourself, da91bird, is lots of fun. I assume you think that I am a member of the famed and scandalous LAPD. There is a difference here in LA between city police and the Sheriff's Department.
Arctic, I only call them as I see them. If Kamaro is in fact a member of law enforcement, then the attitude that he has exhibited is exactly what gives cops a bad name. You'll have to forgive me for expressing my opinion on that.
As for your opinion about cops, I couldn't really care less. Like I say, job security. In this time of a slowing economy, I have some of you here to thank for providing me with a stable livelihood without fear of being laid off.

Obviously I am aware you are not a member of the LAPD, since you said you were a member of the Sheriff's Department. I am aware of the difference. I am not of minimal intelligence, because if I was, I'd be a member of the LA County Sheriff's Department, too.
What irks me about this whole discussion is the holier-than-thou attitude of all you turds who think your shit doesn't stink. Who are you to judge? Why are you so freaked out about such a non-issue? If you really want to go somewhere and be disgusted, go to some of the news groups and chat with the idiots who claim Andrea Yates is not to blame for the murders of her children, because the poor dear had PPD.
It was an abandoned POS car, it was bound for the junk yard (assuming this entire discussion is not hypothetical), who really gives a damn if he chose to strip it?

"I am not of minimal intellegence, because if I was, I'd be a member of the LA County Sherriff's Department, too."
I see. And how do you spell "Sheriff's"?
"It was an abandoned POS car, it was bound for the junk yard (assuming this entire discussion is not hypothetical), who really gives a damn if he chose to strip it?"
The rightful owner, perhaps? Stealing is stealing, period.
I don't think my shit doesn't stink. I am quite aware that the fan in the bathroom can't keep up.
I don't have a holier than thou attitude. Just because I'm a cop, I don't consider myself exempt from the laws that I am sworn to defend. I do, however, have a problem with those who think they can disregard those rules with impunity. That's my job. Stealing is stealing.

I'm sure you aced that question on your cop test.
I'm glad you're out there, Joe, feeling indignant about this one car. I'm not going to hit you up about getting out there "and worring about the real crime", because it's a moot point now. I don't know the history of this car, and neither do you. Based on what I DO know about it, I'm willing to give Jason the benefit of the doubt.

"I'm sure you aced that question on your cop test."
What I aced you would have failed.
You are right. I don't know the history of the car. But, it is reasonable to presume that somebody was the rightful owner of it and at some point in time gave sufficient value for it. Jason was not that person unless he's not telling us something. The rightful owner of that car has the right to park that car wherever he/she chooses so long as it is within the laws applicable to the specific jurisdiction. Jason should have done the right thing and called the police, reported a possible 503A (recovered vehicle), and left the thing alone. Stripping the car was wrong. Society has said so, and Jason would be arrested if the police were to find out and have sufficient evidence. I do not give him the benefit of the doubt since there really isn't any doubt at all. He admittedly took property that wasn't his. Stealing is stealing.
I'm not feeling indignant about one car. I could care less about the car. My concern lies with the folks here that think it's okay to go ahead and strip a car that is sitting on the street. Obviously, they aren't thinking how they would react if it was their car that got stolen, could have been recovered in at least fair shape, but instead was stripped and junked by some street leeches. Judging by the temperament that I sometimes see around here, I think that those people would be pissed to say the least and we would see another topic here on the board titled "FUCK FUCK FUCK!!! MY CAR GOT STOLEN" that included text describing how the owner of the ripped off car would like to hunt down and kill the SOB that took his car and stripped it. Food for thought......
