I was watching the history channel last night and they had a show about the AK-47. I thought the gun was amazing.
How hard would it be to get and own an automatic AK-47. Are they illegal to possess? I'm not talking about going to Africa and getting one and trying to import it to the states. Can I buy one at a pawn shop or gun store?
I think having one would be good for home security, especially since I am in the market for a new home.

Heh. My understanding is that they are legal if the full automatic mode is disabled, but it is very easy to convert it back to full automatic operation...

If you mean automatic as in machine gun you have to apply to the ATF for permission to own it. $200.00 fee and a lengthy application. Go to any Class 3 weapons dealer and they will be glad to give you the forms and sell you the gun. Requires two sets of fingerprints. Don't have a police record either. All this applies if your state allows the ownership of automatic weapons.
If you mean semiauto then just go buy one. Assuming your state allows the ownership of assault weapons.
BTW mine has a 75 round drum for a magazine!

its easy to convert a semi auto gun back to full auto... but getting the parts to do it isn't easy. All the legal places to get it require you have all sorts of military certifications or some shit. I remember looking into it for my dad when he was talking about making his AR-15 into a full auto rifle.

Converting a weapon from semi to full auto is what we call a ten. Ten years in jail and ten thousand dollars in fines.

A regular semi-auto AK would run you about $250 either a Maadi or Romanian WUM....
30 round clips are between $10-20
Parts to convert to full auto are about $75 and do not require any special permits to purchase... BATF does not consider any part of the gun as gun except the reciever. Go to www.tapco.com. (http://www.tapco.com.) It's like ordering from Summit, just give 'em your credit card... All that is required is drilling a hole in your reciever and putting a pin with the spring in it....
I just sold my Maadi for $300, bought it for $275 a year ago... An aluminum radiator and a Tilton power starter and some cash left, as the the car swap meed.

How wrong you are, the mere possession of the parts that would convert your weapon to full auto is the same as having the auto
weapon itself. Placing a part in the weapon that is intended for a machine gun, whether or not it makes your weapon auto or not)
is the same as having an unregistered machine gun.
Check with the ATF.
This is directly from the BATF: Machine gun. Any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot, without
manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger. The term shall also include the frame or receiver of any such weapon, any part designed and intended solely and exclusively, or combination of parts designed
and intended, for use in converting a weapon into a machine gun, and any combination of parts from which a machine gun can be assembled if such parts are in the possession or under the control of a person.

david koresh was under investigation for turning semi-autos into full autos and look what they did to his house. if you want to have a tank and a raid team come crashing through your house you go right on ahead and do the conversion.

Actually Firecop I think that he was referring to devices such as TriBurst, HellFire, etc. These contraptions are BATF legal and don't modify the gun itself. I've never tried them though so I can's say for certain how good they work.

They don't work.

Hmmmmm.....fully automatic assault rifle with all kinds of red tape....or a Remington defender 12 gauge with double OO buck...much cheaper, just as deadly and much easier to obtain.Rugged too. Fully auto is a bit over kill dont ya think? and if the aforementioned gun isnt enough to stop an intruder, then you must live in a real bad neighborhood. just my 2 cents.

I never said there is any sence in converting to full auto... But the truth is there, it's easy to convert and you can easily obtain the parts... (Real parts, not Hellfire crap) Do I think there is any sence is defending your house with an automatic AK-47? You got to be stupid to do that. AK has such a great penetration it goes through walls and cars.. You gonna kill all your neighbors and family members while "defending". And me.... I don't even own an AK-47 anymore... I would much rather spend $50 on carparts than amunition.

If you have the liscense you can convert it. After you get your liscense machinegun prices start at about $1500 and go up. And you pay that $200 every year.

Um, no, you do not pay the $200.00 every year.
