Tonight I'm on patrol N/B on one of the main roads in town. I look behind me in the rearview and I see a vehicle coming up fast. Now, I have my cruise lights on so it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who I am. So I pull over onto a private
drive and let him pass. He passes and I see that he's moving right along. I get behind him and clock the vehicle at 65+ in a forty zone. Just as I'm about to light him up he turns left onto a side street and starts picking up speed again, I light him up and
he doesn't stop for about a quarter mile.
I know I can't call a pursuit and just as I think I have to let this guy go, he turns in his driveway, jumps out and says "I'm home
now and you can't do anything about it!"
Needless to say, it was an expensive night for him.

I think the quote "the gene pool could use some chlorine" fits here.

He's 22 years old and one of my fellow officers has arrested this guy 16 times! Three in custody. Flown out by Lifestar Helicopter once for a broken back as the result of a roll over accident (his fault).

Kamaro, Connecticut does not allow pursuits for motor vehicle violations.

So that means if I'm in CT, that whatever motor vehicle violation I do I can just try to outrun the cops? Probably get hit with evading a police officer if I get caught though. If somebody's trying to evade, that seems like a good enough reason to pursue him and see what he's hiding.

Nope, not gonna happen. Statewide pursuit policy does not allow pursuit for a motor vehicle violation.

cool... lets race the cops....
or not.. http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
im guessing that is for safety reasons but short of a bank robbery, what can you start a chase with?

Well, there is a difference between a violation and misdemeanor. So reckless driving (which in Connecticut is any speed 85 mph or greater), misconduct, pretty much anything that you can be taken into custody for or would be a court appearance required.

Oh yeah, again last night I'm driving down the same road as in my first post, this time S/B. I pull over to use my cell phone and guess who was right behind me and had to pass, Mr. I'm safe at home. I sure he's wondering how I know it's him in my rearview!

so you guys don't chase for traffic how do you catch stolens? i get more pursuits at night for high beams being on. that's like a big beacon for THIS CAR IS STOLEN, PLEASE STOP ME!
here are a few for the last year...
cars chased for high beams - 3-all stolen.
cars chased for various traffic that were felonies i wasn't aware of until after the stop - 1 was for robbery, 1 was for burglary, 1 was for drugs and possession of a weapon, 3 were for stolen vehicles, 3 were for felony warrants, and 3 for misdemeanor warrants. then i've had a few that ran only because they didn't want a ticket. and these were discovered from little traffic infractions.

I'm not saying we cannot initiate the stop. If it's a confirmed stolen the supervisor's may let the pursuit go depending upon speed, etc. I chase cars down all the time, but pursuits are very rare.
Also our roads are mostly rural, two laners, no street lights, no straight aways, no limited access highways (in my area).
