If you had to pick rather to start out as a State trooper or County police which would you do? I have to make this decision soon, ive already been offered a job wheni turn 21 with the City of Columbia, but they dont have take home cars so i kinda want a car to take home, and i got offered a job with the USC Campus Police and all the agencys start out around 25-27 a year.
My main choices are State Trooper, Richland County, or Columbia City. The only thing is if im a state trooper ill be doing ALL traffic, if im city or county ill be doing EVERYTHING, domestic calls, traffic everything.
I plan on doing this for about 5 years, then getting on at SLED(south carolina law enforcment division) Its kinda like an In-State FBI, whey investigate everything, for other police depts, they have a SWAT Team, blood hounds, criminal records, and what the dept i plan to be on http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/smile.gifNARCOTICS http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/smile.gif

STATE!!!! If you want to go SLED, you'll have a HELLUVA better shot if you have "State Trooper" on your resume. Also, you won't be doing just traffic. If you're in a rural area, you'll be supplementing Sheriff's patrols on those domestics and such. Plus, you'll work tons of accidents, which are usually really cool. If they paid better down here, I'd probably climb on board with the Texas DPS, but I would have to take a $30,000 a year pay cut to do it, and that isn't about to happen!!!
Oh, and if you work for a county you won't get paid squat. You're also eligible to lose your job if you ever have a new Sheriff voted in while you're working there. Also, they serve papers (subpoenas) and the job is political as hell since the Sheriff is an elected official.
The county should be your LAST resort!!!

Yea, thats the only thing i dont like about the county, other then it being so political it would be my choice. I think its the same with the city becaus the city chief is elected. My dads been a SLED Agent for 30 years, so i know about the job and that wherei want to end up and retire. Ive been a Highway patrol explorer since i was 15 (5years) and i recently had to lay off for awhile becaus i became a correctional officer and i know i dont want to make a career out of corrections http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/eek.gif so anyway, im pretty much a shoe-in for the academy, i just gotta pass the 21 weeks which i should be able to do, im pretty sure thats the route i wanna take going with the highway. Thats where everyone else has advised me to go as well.

i got accepted by the TXDPS back in august. after i went to austin i discovered the serious need for troopers in the deep southwest portion of texas and opted to maintain my humble abode here in DFW. if i was still a single guy starting out i would have definitely gone through with it. and i LOVE working traffic and i hope to eventually get into a traffic division.
