I was driving my kid to school this morning and the road is about 2 miles long with an elementary on one end and a middle school on the other. The speed limit is 35 and the school zone at the elementary is 25. This is one road I always obey the limits on, with all the kids there, walking to school and such. Not to mention it is pretty heavily patroled by police. Needless to say, we always have a handful of assholes trying to run 55 or 60 down that road cause they overslept by a few minutes. This morning, a red Neon got behind me with a lady driving and 2 kids in the car. This crazy bitch was tailgating so close I couldn't see the headlights on her car. Then she started to make moves in that car like she was trying to ram me in the rear! She was waving her arms around and yelling and making hand motions at me the whole time she was trying to ram me! All for doing the speed limit! I slowed down a little and waved my finger in a "don't you dare" motion at her and she just kept this up the entire way to the middle school. I pulled in and she pulled in behind me, ran to another parking lot and dumped her kids out, and hauled ass out of the school lot. I told my daughter to find out who those kids were and who their mother is. I am going to contact the school resource officer, one of our city PD, and report her to him. This crazy bitch doesn't belong on the roads! Is there anything else I can do? Will they give her a ticket for this? She is dangerous to be driving this way around kids! Not to mention trying to ram cars that are in her most important way.

I hate that too. I always get people tailgating me so close I can't see their lights. What I do is usually do ten under the speed limit, that usually pisses them off. Also if its distracting, flip the button on your rearview mirror. That way you can't see what their doing and not get tense. I usually slow down to about 10 under and once the attempt to pass me I match their speed, that way they can't get out of the other lane. Not really but I could imagine that!

The best thing to do is drive away. Get the plate and make a complaint. Just because you feel the need don't do the deed. Give me an amen brotha!

I'm working on that one now. I couldn't get the plate number, this is a narrow two lane neighborhood street. I do have a call into the local PD and I am waiting on the Serg. over the area to call me back. She isn't going to be too hard to track down tho, her kid goes to the same school my kid goes to. And the resource officer there is a member of the same local PD. I definatly will sign a complaint or what ever the officer needs to ticket this nut.

I don't know if its a law or not, but I know in the MA Drivers handbook it says 2 sec follow distance and 3-4 sec in inclement weather. There's also something about if your stopped behind someone you have to be able to see their rear tires. Those are both probably rules of thumb, but I don't know if there are actual laws pertaining to them.

If someone is tailgating you and they cause an accident, I know in VA they get a ticket for following too closely and causing an accident.
I'm sure tailgating is a ticketable offense, because its a safety hazard.

I know that here in Alabama, you can go down and visit your local Po-Po's, file a complaint, and then sign a warrant. If you do that, then you get to go to court to testify, and it becomes a big, "your word against their word" party. Most people usually don't do this. They file a complaint and thats that.

It is in Texas too. You usually have to be a real asshole to actually get a ticket for it.

I would have slammed on the brakes. BEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRPPPPPPP
hey, theirs nothing anyone can do to her going off your word, other then try and catch her in the act later, whats filling out a complaint gonna do? The cop has to witness something like that. If you wanted her to pay, making her hit you in the back would have gotten her a ticket and raised her insurance. She or her insurance woulda payed to fix you car, and you could be paid for pain and suffering if your hurt.

i have a cure for tailgating. i hold the button down and i pull real hard on my e-brake. when the person behind me sees my car abruptly slow down without the warning of three bright red lights, they have to exit the roadway to change shorts. that usually solves the problem.

the last time i brake checked someone, it was a big black guy that threatened to kill me and followed me for 5 miles. i wasn't really scared (he didn't have a gun so what do i care), but i've decided its not a very good idea to do it again.

I did something like this too. I was on a four lane street, 2 lanes each way. This Intrepid behind me was tailgating me like no other so I tapped the brakes a little so that they would let up. I slowed way down and the car got in the other lane to pass me, as I look over to see the dumbfuck that was on my assend, I see 4 HUGE faces staring right back. Then they got in front of me by cutting me off, slammed on their brakes til I almost hit them, and came to a complete stop. Then, 4 doors opened, all at the same time. And at the same time 4 huge black dudes got out, all tucked up in black business suits, sunglasses, and all, like they worked for the secret service. Then the 4 doors shut. They started to walk towards my car. I threw that bitch into reverse and was going backwards down this busy ass street for about a block before I turned onto a sidestreet. Crazy shit......

I actually got a warning for 'tailgating an officer'. We were both in the left lane, and i started to go into the middle (turn) lane to turn into my apt. complex when he swerved in front of me and jammed his brakes, I hit mine hard, but didn't break traction, no squeal. He pulled into my complex (I had a feeling he was going to pull me over), pulled to the side, and as I passed him, flash flash, he pulled me over. First thing he said to me "You think your funny!" I replied "I don't know what you mean." Honestly, I was just a wee bit scared. Apparently he had gotten a call in my complex and swerved in to make the turn. So, I ask you cops, can you pass a cop if he is going to slow (ie 40 in a 45)? Since then I usually stay 2 car lengths behind a cop...sometimes three. Oh yeah, wh do you guys follow me in my Camaro. I once had a cop follow me for like 9 miles...I thought he was going to pull into where I live, but instead he slowed, waited for me to turn, than did a U'e and drove off. I don't speed (Escpecially after my accdnt.), and I don't swerve or drive like an asshole, I think it's the backwards hat and Camaro. http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/smile.gif

You can pass a cop on a 4lane road, but I don't think anyone is stupid enough to.
