ok here is the thing..I bought a 83 SC 270ci V6 camaro with 128000 KM on it a few days ago..
obviously it wasnt taken care of very well as it has some rust and well the engine was kinda dirty ( black air filter)
anyhow..
I was driving around after I bought it and I started to hear this ticking noise coming from the engine. the more I accelrated the louder the noise got. and before I could get home I died on me..
I took it to a mechanic and he said it is most likely the timing chain..
so I stripped the water pump and timing ocver to get to the chain and it is on. Its on pretty good..its just alittle loose on one side..but it doesnt look like its gonna fall off.
if anyone could help...

PS :my camaro is exactly like Chris', same color and everything

Pull the harmonic balancer and run it up to top dead center. If the timing marks dont line up it jumped time. If the chain is really tight its possible that one of the gears is messed up. Take it apart and have someone else look at it if your not sure.

[ 01-04-2002: Message edited by: Chris84SC ]

Ticking isn't timing chain. It is either valvetrain or bottom end issues, rod knock, etc. A mechanic didn't tell you that a motor with ticking consistent with RPM BUT YET RUNNING was a timing chain issue.

Maybe this is the time to broach the subject of engine swaps?

ya..someone else said it might be a bottom end problem..
so where do I start..I need to get it running soon and I dont got alot of cash to waste..
are the parts expensive? is it alot of work?

It probly spun a bearing. You have to rebuild it. Or else put a crank kit in and sell it. Crank kits are about $130.

Pull your valvecovers off and check the valvetrain first, ticking can be caused by a collapsed lifter, bent pushrod, loose rocker arm, etc, as well as bottom end.

Wait, you say it stopped running after it was ticking? Does it turn over at all when you crank it?

If it doesn't turn over (and your starter works) that motor is fucked.

ya it turns over..
but the car only has 128000 km on it..I wouldnt think it would be that bad..
