Does anyone Know what the 2.8 got for mlieage brand new.
Im asking because im in a little delemma. I need a car to travel to school next year, around 100 miles round trip each day, so im looking for a little 4 banger to drive. then i was thinking that if im rebuilding the 2.8 and it gets good mpg why not just drive that. I mean my 305 gets 20 mpg on the highway so shouldnt a care with half the engine get better mpg?

25 mpg is likely.

I've found that my little 2.8L is a gas hog for the size engine it's got. After a full tune up (MSD coil, wires, cap, rotor, etc...) the best mine got was 20 MPG.

I just checked www.carpoint.com (http://www.carpoint.com) The 88 mpi 2.8 with auto is rated at 27 mpg on the highway. The 5.0 is rated at 25. Not much of a difference.

I have a 91 RS with a stock 3.1 V6 with 145,000 miles on it. Last month after a tune up I got 29.5 mpg going 65 mph (cruise control) with the AC on. You should be able to get decent mileage with the engine in good tune. :)
