I have a '90 3.1L Camaro and I can't seem to find performance parts. Most of the places I've talked to tell me to sell this car and buy one with a V8. This is my first car and I would like it to be a little bit quicker. I've heard that you can get a new throttle body and put a new air intake on it and it would help some, any more thoughts??? I just don't want to get rid of it yet! or I would go buy a V8, also my insurance would sky rocket!

I wouldn't waste my money on v6 performance parts. Do an engine swap. The insurance company won't know the difference. That way you get to keep the car.
You say this is your first car? How familiar are you with mods, working on cars, or tools in general. If you are really into this, and know how to get things done, then you may want to do an engine swap. If you are just getting your feet wet in the mechanical side of things, modding a V6 is a good way to get rollin'.
I had a sixer, modded it, and eventually replaced it with an 8. The insurance on a six is definitely a plus, so you may want to stick w/ it for a while. Just realize that your car will always get spanked by 'Stangs, T/As, and Z28s, unless you dumped way too much into the car.
If you are modding, look for a K&N filter, hypertech chip, power pulleys, dynomax exhaust, bigger cam, rocker arms, upgraded ign parts, etc.
I have a chip and K&N filter I don't need for sale...

How much would you sell the chip for? I've heard they aren't CA legal... Is that a problem?

Hey guys this is my very first post. :-)
I had a question about V6 performance too.
I have put a K&N airfilter, Computer Chip and a Flowmaster muffler on my car.
I was thinking of putting a high flow cat and get a larger ehaust pipe from the cat back. Would this make much of a difference in HP? Is is worth the cost?
Thanks

i put a high flow muffler on my 3.1 and it's got a little for low end b/c of less back pressure plus it sounds better starting up.

If you really want to mod a v6, put a bigger cam in and some headers. Other people have said those pulleys aren't any good. You guys have better v6's than mine. Mine is a 107hp carbed 2.8 I'm not gonna dump any money in it modding it. I'm building a 355 to put in.

I heard you can get headers for the 3.4L and they will fit since they are the same block. I think RK Sport sells them.

You can get the 3.4 headers, they will bolt up to the heads, but you will have to fabricate a custom "y" pipe in order to use them.
I could list a whole bunch of stuff you could buy to modify your 60* V6, but Id rather post a link.

This is a very informative page that will list performance items you can buy to help that six wake up.
Good luck,

so what exactly is in order to convert a v6 to v8, so far i am told:
-Engine (obviously)
-computer
-motor mounts (possibly)
-transmission (possibly)
and that's just to hit a 305, i am told any bigger and you need frame work or you can bend/twist it (specially w/ t-tops) and a larger rear end...... so basically WAY too much work time and $$$$ for the swap you could a) sell and go by an older sting ray to fix up, or b) sell and go by a v-8 ............
I am basically curious because I have a very customized 3.1 bird that my dad (genius at body work) has helped me throw on the knight rider bumper and start shaving it (ant so far, door locks/handles and gas door next) and we've been slowly fixing every part of her up she was wrecked when i bought her. It'd just hurt a lot to try and sell it now and buy something else.....
I almost did for a 1991 GTA Trans AM with the LT1 engine, and 150mph racing tires..... 4" true dual stainless steel exhaust.... (damn i am getting hard) but that was a bad-ass car.... to me, if i am gonna go to the trouble effort time and expense to modd or swap an engine i'd wanna go all out..... plus whats this rumor? i heard about them not offering a manual LT1 GTA ????

I personally think that modding a v6 isn't a waste of time. Millions of people have done the v8 swap or have a v8 and it's just over done. I personally don't plan on going to a v8 ever.
Second from what I have researched which is a good amount the 3.4l headers will fit with modding to the headers as well as a custom y pipe. Pacesetter prototyped headers for the 3.1/2.8 and they should be in production soon.
I've done Blue Streak Cap/Rotor. MSD coil, K&N filter made open element. High flow cat, flowmaster something muffler(Free) and bigger pipe going all the way back from the cat. Cut off some weight, spare tire and jack, they won't do much on the car, no point dragging them around.
Lastly for a v8 swap your looking at engine, mounts, transmission, not sure about the rear end, drive shafts are interchangable. You also need springs, computer. Headers obviously. Gauges, v6 gauges have the wrong rpm gauge, and speed I'm pretty sure. If you have emissions I'm pretty sure you'll have a problem as well swapping the motor....not sure about that though... I think that's about it. It's a lot of work in my opinion, much better off buying another car with a v8 imo.

I've been told by quite a few people that there is a SC for the 3.1, but I can't seem to find one anywhere?! Anyone know if one is made, and who makes it?? That would be the easiest way to make some quick HP for a 6!
My dad's got a '92 with a 3.1, and an IROC w/350. The IROC stays in storage but he'd like his 3.1 a bit quicker...

Swap a V8 in it....your insurance wont Sky rocket cause the Car was built as a V6. The vin will always says its a V6. It doesnt take much to do it, just find a Running rusted out V8 camaro and swap it into your V6 car. Just make sure you keep the parts car until your car is finished in case you need more parts. You will need to switch the motor mounts, and its a bitch gettin them out through the subframe. Dont be scared, just do it.
