Yeah, I've got the totally stock V6, so life's not too exciting around here, yet. I've planning on pretty much completely replacing my drivetrain and suspension, but that'll take years to finish.

Yeah, i know the feeling. I'm thinking of buying a 305 out of a 91 rs but money kind of puts me on hold for now. my 2.8 is stock too, except a k&n filter and computer chip. what's cool is i can get the tires to sqeal while shifting into 2nd. i think my 6 has alot more power than most people take credit for, but it still not a v-8 though......oh well, i can always dream.......

I got a 82 sport coupe that used to have a v6
we built up the bottom end and boosted the compression past 11:1, It went from 102hp to over 200, but I kept destroying heads so it came out and I built up a 355 v8 with about 320hp
I still have alot of respect for v6's though

same here. i like a trusty v-6 w/ moderate power rather than a v-8 w/ gobs of power, but breaks down all the time.

Yeah v6's aren't as bad as some people here make them out to be. Atleast we don't have iron dukes LOL. They were good engines but a little weak for a camaro. I got a 350 I'm gonna build up for mine. It's gonna be awhile though. Maybe in the fall I'll put it in.

that's cool. are you going to keep the original tranny in w/ the 350 or change it? i'm wondering because i have a t-5 tranny and i'm sure it'll bolt up to a 305/350, but w/ different bellhousing. or not?
Chris84SC
04-04-2001, 06:49 AM
Well the t-5 is only rated to handle 260lbs of tq. My 350 is gonna put out close to 390lbs. I'm gonna put a 700-R4 in and maybe get a t-56 later.

IVe got a V6... I think my car has decent power.. MY friend has an 82 Cross Fire Z28 305 and i think it is slower than my V6.. One day we were at a stoplight by each other, and I had my AC on, and the light turned... I had it at 3/4 throttle and he barely started to pull on me... Later he told me about how he "kicked my ass" racing, but I wasnt even racing, lol.. That kind suprised him.

<===Has a 88 RS w/ a v6 it will keep up w/ my brothers 86 iroc that has a 305 in it. people just don't give the v6 a lot of respect because i can squeal my tires almost as long as my friends 87 iroc w/ a 350. But his is an automatic. So I think my car does alright.

My daughter has the 1992 RS Camaro with the 3.1 V6 MPFI. She is going to keep driving it as long as it has no problems, but we still have her old car (1987 Z28) which was wrecked for parts including the 305 TPI. She wanted to change engines as soon as we got the car, but I explained the economics although I don't blame her.

I also have a V6. It's a 1992 Firebird 3.1L
There are times I long for the power of a V8, but I am very proud of my car and the work that I have done to it, so in the end it is not that bad.
Maybe someday I'll do an engine swap, but for now I love my V6. :)

i have a v6 also but it doesn jsut fine when street racing because you just can't hit the top speeds on a street with other cars, it is all about driving skills. i love my car but i still and always will wish i had an SS. but for now, especially with the gas, i will keep my v6 and just modify it a little more.

I have a 91 v6 with a 3.1 in it and i love it, it's cammed up a little bit and i can light up the back tires when ever i want to so I love it, i just think it needs more top end. But all in all i like the little v6( does any one know were i can get a chip for it).

I've contemplated doing a 3.4L build up to around 230 HP which CAN be done. It's just that i'm broke as a joke. But i got all of you beat: I got the power of a V6 PLUS wonderful FLAME RED interior. Top that!! I love my car and i hate it that virtually every car i pull up to can beat me but funk it. Who cares...i don't need anymore tickets anyway.
Hey Christina, where ya at in SoCal?

You'll need a V8 bellhousing. Along with new motor mounts, springs, radiator and fan shroud.

I have a 3.1 V6 in my Bird. Some day I would like to get one of the 200 horse V6s that are in the newer F-bods. I drove one of those around and man, who needs an 8 with the way those things go?
My neighbors still comment about my "big engine" One of the neighbor girls said her mother was in her driveway when I started my car and she said, "Is that Jason with his big engine I hear?" :D
Just think, you could be driving an Eclipse, Celica, or Integra that seem to be all the craze, and all they have is a wimpy 4 banger.

I love my V6... I can squeal and all a lot more than my friends riced out 4 bangers, and I paid less for mine!!! I can kick the crap out of them off the line and up hill, that’s when they fall way behind. Try taking a rice up a hill… then you can stop and laugh when they finally get to the top!

Heh, I just saw that having a V-8 only adds about $400 to the value of a '92 3rd gen. F-bod and about $300 to an '88. That is weird considering the differences in new prices.
So what do you get for a V-8? A little faster at the price of higher insurance, worse gas milage, higher maintenance, and $3-400. :p

I have a 92 Firebird 3.1 V6. I have a crane 2030 cam, comp cams 1.52 roller rockers, Ported upper and lower intake, Bored TB, 19lb injectors, Hooker Super Comp Headers, dynomax cat and cat-back, jet pulleys, MSD 6A ignition w/coil &plugs, Custom CAI and hypertech thermo chip(which is for sale). Soon too be installed parts are Venom Nitrous, and Custom burned superchip. " Just try me V8's lets see what I can do!" I love my car and I could care less that it is a V6, chics dont care what is under the hood, they care about what the car looks like and who's in it.

Sorry about being a little late, but I dont go on this site often. I just did my home work on parts. I asked around and sooner or later I found them. The hardest part to find were headers though they stopped making them in 88 for the 2.8 MPI, but they fit the 3.1 though. You need to get a custom y-pipe made for them. It is expensive, but thats the price you have to pay, I lucked out I bought my headers NEW off of ebay they have them for sale once in a blue moon. There is less than 20 headers made for the V6 mine are hookers super comps which are even more rare. I have heard that hedman made 6 sets and discontinued them. So did hooker and this other brand. Good luck on finding them, hopefully you could get some custom made. My other mods make my car really quick. I'm getting my cam readjusted when it comes out of storage because it has a nasty tick to it which affects the timing. I am going to put on 1.6 roller rockers after that. Peace Out.

Hey and sorry im kinda late registering on this site, i always thought they meant TGO when they said 3GO  , anyhow i have a mainly stock V6 and although ive got my ass kicked by this N2O neon residing a few blocks down, i'd still be rather pushing an F-body then driving one of these rice rockets.
plus not many ppl in my school know much about F-bodys so they think im packing over 250 horses which eliminates any rice racing attempts   .
so yeah, im damn proud of my V6, and happy to finaly reach this site .

My car came with a 2.8. I had all intentions to keep it but ended up with a hole in the oilpan. I was told the only way to get a perfect seal with the gasket was to yank the engine. I weighed my options (if it was out I might as well rebuild it) and when all was said & done I ended up with an LG4. Maybe not the best choice but the most cost effective (cost $400 cdn for a parts car)
BTW I still have most of the MPFI set-up if anyone is interested (all thats missing is the wiring harness)

I've got an 85 2.8 MFI automatic as a project to do with my stepson who turned 13 last week. I got it with a blown motor for $100 from my neighbor.
He wants a 5-sp, and I found an 85 5-sp parts car that's actually in better shape than the car we have, so if the guy has the title we may build the other car.
I'll find out today. And I'll be getting a Z-28 parts car or two from him also, for suspension, rear and brakes. Might go for a Z-28 look too.
As for engine performance, well, a v6 is all he needs. We'll put a 3.4 in it, but that's it.
You'll be hearing more about this in the next 3 years.....

I got a 3.1L V6 too. It's a head turner at the local car shows I'm impressed with all the people who stop and look at my car. It's stock right now but i'm gonna start with the mods in the spring when i get enough $$$ saved up.

I have a v6 Firebird. It happens to be a 94 with the 3.4L, but hey, whatever. I really wanted a v8 car, but since I work an hour away from my home, I'm really enjoying my v6, especially with gas prices being so ridiculous lately - makes me glad I bought a 6 cyl.

Holy old ass post batman!!!!!!!!! :raz:
I have an '89 2.8 Firebird. I dropped a cam in it (3.4 cam) and port matched the intake and heads. It helped a bit but it idles funny now. Idle wants to drop down to 600 RPMs then shoots up to about 1200 RPMs.
It is my daily driver. Gets 27-29 MPG depending on how I drive it. ;)
What is sad is that I get over 23 MPG in my LT1 T/A that has heads and cam work done. :conf:

I have a 1991 V-6 3.1 Firebird, I almost traded in for a 1991 GTA Trans Am with a LT-1 350 Corvette engine stock :) also had 3.5" true dual stainless steel exhaust all the way back. grrr, kinda wished I had, till I looked into insurance rates, and gas mileage, but I am actually impressed with the gas mileage claims the owner had and the low weight of the car compared to mine.
But the more I consider swapping engines, computer, and the Rear End, and possibly Transmission I think I'll wait a few eyars till my insurance drops and I have a gagage of my own to store a car in and I'll get me an old Sting Ray Vette :)
