I am bored, Flame away...

Sorry dude, but I don't think you're going to get many flames on that one. I think for the most part, we agree with you. At least I do. I'd love to have pride in my car, and I do, but it needs a V8. Being slow sucks ass. But at least I don't drive a DORF. Especially one of those ugly Rustang things they sell. http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'm with SillyWabbit on this one. But the 89 TTA V6 doesn't suck and the 4th gen 3.8's have more power then some 3rd gen V8's so not all six poppers suck, just most.

Just heard of a website where this guy had to have a massive amount of NOS flowing to his v6 said he sis the 1/4 mile in 12.something sec's here's the link http://www.angelfire.com/nj3/misterjuice/james.htm If its try I have hope for my car.

You have to remember Fireboy that the V6 you're talkin about is a 3.8 from a 4th gen firebird that is rated with more horsepower than a 305 TPI from a thirdgen. With a little work they can run 14's naturally aspirated so you have to put that in perspective. It would take a HELL of a lot more to get one of our 2.8's or 3.1's that quick.

Yeah, try a massive bottom end rebuild with a 500HP shot of NOS. Then just maybe the little 2.8 could be in the 12's.

Crusader

I would like to see a 12 second 2.8. But its nothing I would ever think about doing, 'cause in the end it would still be a 2.8 and I've had one of 'em for long enough.

I think a built up 3.8 would be a nice swap for a 2.8 You could keep the same springs. Theres also a 4.3 you could bore and stroke it and get it around 5.0 That would be a badass v6.

Chris84SC

I just ran a 4.3 through desktop dyno and got 316 hp. Using a dual purpose street/track cam and large tube headers w/open exhaust. You can get a switch from jc whittney to open your exhaust whenever you want.

hell, I just bought my V6 because A: I made it look nice, and B: when I'm doing the engine swap, my VIN number will trace back to a V6 and I'm already only paying 80 bucks a month. Just gotta pay the bills/debt first. My wreck and transmission really set me back big time. (3rd tranny in 6 months) http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/frown.gif

Um, there IS a reason that people turn Fieros into backyard grills. They're pieces of shit.

actually no, they are pretty damn good solid cars...

and they would make crappy grills, the body is plastic

no. they quit making them because they werent what GM wanted.

the elec system prob is from people working on the cars that didnt know what they were doing..

unlike a front engined car, a mid engined car dosent have the air flowing around to remove engine comparment heat. so it is REALLY hot around the engine... somtimes the AIR is over 200*
and that makes heat shields and wire routes important.

the fiero has several small heat shields the work quite well... the prob happens when some redneck backwoods i-know-what-im-doing guy removes one, or moves the wires to a diff location or route..... then the extra heat melts the wires and it burns the car....

thats all. :p

I don't know about you guys but the few chap mods I have I beat 305 TBI's all the time.

Custom CAI, 19 Lb Injectors, port polish upper & intermidiate intake, convert the air pump into a crank case vacuum pump. I am also looking at a custom C/F cuspercharger and headers right now. Looking at bolting on 60 HP... total with header cost... 350.

Perspectivly GM knows what the 2.8 and 3.1 MPFI were made for, it was for the people who wanted the firebird look but didnt want to pay for the power they didnt need. I.E. DAILY DRIVER. And granted they are still peppy and take a beating before they start to detonate they just arent performance cars. Hell even the 4th Gen birds are made for the same reason. No substitue for V8. And yeah 3.8 may have on paper more power, do they actually apply it the same no. A 94 3.8 isnt gonna keep with the TPI v8.

Just curious, how much more would my 3.8 be able to outperform a 3rd gen v8? And which 3rd gen v8s would it beat?

wow you really brought a post back from the dead!
Whats your 3.8 run stock? 16s? You can beat 305s until tpi...and no chance in hell with a 350 tpi.

Just wanted to point out that people make a big deal about their V6s being able to beat TBI 305s....thats not a big accomplishment.

My v6 firebird is mad slow and shittie, but it is faster then my 5.7L Silverado........only because it has 210K and it's shot, but still......

my v6 has 176,000 on it and it's piss slow. I'm sooooo sick of it this winter I'm droping in some real horsepower with a built 350

Turbo 2.8s Hang with LS1 SS and Turbo 3.4 blocks with 2.8 accessories and intake with T4 Turbo will rape an LS1, pretty cheap too

nightrider
04-12-2005, 06:33 PM
cool. this post is 1.5 years old

Its really cool saying highly modified cars can hang with stock ones too :finger:

what actually is cool is taking that LS1 or any other V8 and turbocharging that.

well, a running 305 beats a non-running 3800 anyday. A running 3800 is a different story.

The numbers:
87 305 170hp 250 tq
95 3800 200hp 225 tq

Same here buddy

My 25th Anniversary 92' RS w/T-5 has taken out more than a handful of 305's w/700r4's. I have a buddy with a 91 RS 305 w/T-5 and we run 'em quite alot and are very close, but he pulls me off the line and I can't catch up (more torque damnit). The auto's just don't pull the cars all that well.

I'd rather have a V6 and at least have an excuse for being slow, along with 22mpg on almost all jackrabbit city driving.

i see a lot of talk about swapping the v6 for a v8. its not worth the trouble, i mean you could eliminate the problem of swapping the right electronics by putting in a carbureted, but you still have the problem with your car frame being all bent leaving you with a pos. the frame in the v6 is meant to handle the power of the v6 not the power of a v8 the t-tops would literally pop out from the car bending. plus in states that have emissions testing you'd fail and have an undrivable car. they check the vin and use that, if youre putting out more emissions than what the vin says its supposed to then youre screwed. dont mean to be a wet blanket, but this is coming from first hand experience.

1. Holy old thread, Batman!

2. The bodies are identical from the V8 to the V6.

If you are going to make a ton of power from either engine, better get SFC's.

BTW: The new motor we are building should be about 300hp to the crank while N/A (and weighs a few 100lbs less), that is good enough to rape stock TPI's.
