I've got a stock 89 RS 305 TBI that kills starter solenoids. The problem has been getting steadily worse over the years, defeating all my previous strategies:
* replacing the battery
* replacing the starter every summer
* shelling out for high quality starters
* using a backup booster pak for jumpstarts
* installing heat shields on the starter
* opening the air cleaner cover and the
throttle for the start
I used to suspect that excessive heat was causing the problem (even though I have stock headers), but lately the problem even occurs first thing in the morning. My current starter is a brand new (not remanufactured) AC Delco installed three months ago with both a reflective wrap and a metal shield. My bettery is six months old.
What else can I do?
A previous topic in this forum ("Starter Solenoid Mod Question", 6/13/01) mentioned something about relocating the starter solenoid, replacing it with a Well's part (F490 or F496). What's the story with this? Why move the solenoid? How does one do it? Might it help me out? Where can I find out more?
Frustratedly,
Fred
