Ok I have a 1984 Trans Am with a 305. I have replaced the stock carb with an Edelbrock 600cfm carb and the stock dist with an Accel one, along with cap and rotor. the computer was ditched. What kind of ignition mods can i do that will aid in later performance mods. Also I wanted to replace the stock gauges with after market ones. will I need electric or mechanical gauges. I plan on putting them on an aluminum plate in place of the stock ones.
Matt

I would go with an all MSD steup for ignition. I would also stay with electronic gauges. Just my thoughts though.

Electric guages would be better, but I think they're not quite as accurate, but not that much off. The error would be worth not having to run vacuum and other lines into your dash.

what type of msd products. i here some people talk about a 6a something, some kind of box, not sure what it does. I am planning to use all electrical gauges and get new sending units. I would like to use the stock wireing if possable, if not then i guess i will have to run my own.
Matt

I would buy a MSD Super HEI kit. You can either get the 6a kit or the 6al kit. The "box" you are talking about is the Ignition control unit. I would also probably go ahead and get an MSD distributor also. If you are just going to run your car on the street and minimal strip use then get the 6a kit (part # MSD-8400 from summit, and runs about $189) If you are doing a lot of strip running then you should get the 6al kit (part # MSD-8500 and runs about $245). The advantage of the 6al kit is that you have a rev control so that you won't blow your engine. The kit comes with the ignition box, coil, dust cover, and coil wire. If you get and MSD distributor it will be about $195. I hope this helps you out. Good luck with the project. BTW, I will be buying a 6al kit this coming spring. I have seen a few of them and they seem to work great.
