I have a 1989 camaro 305 v-8 tbi. with a recent oil change (oil level is good)

heres my problem:

when the car is cold (when i first start it), it will have about 30 psi of oil pressure. Then when it warms up to normal driving temerature (somewhere between 180-220) it will have about 15 psi when i am driving at 75 mph, then when i stop at a traffic light (or when the car is at an idle) the oil pressure drops down really low and bounces off of zero.

at first i thought it was the gauge.
but sitting at a traffic light the car heats up quick if the oil pressure is low.
but if the car has around 30 psi i can sit through a light and it wont heat up...

I bought a new oil pressure sending unit but i havent installed it yet because i cant get the old unit off. Is there a special tool to take it off.

i bought a tool to put the new sending unit on but the old unit is bigger than the new unit and the old unit doesnt have rounded off corners like the new one does...

how fast should the idle be at when idling?
in park and in drive???

i would appreciate any input toward this topic

thanks

dan

open the oil filler cap while its running and see if you have oil sqwurting out of the rocker arms. if it is then its the gauge.
