The 305 in my 92 Bird is comin out next week, and i'm goin to put a mild 355 in. I'm not for sure yet what exacltly i'm goin to do to the 355 parts wise, but i'm wanting to know how hard it would be to swith it over to a carb and what all would need to be done to run a carb, or if i should just keep the TBI system and have a chip burnt....i'm lookin for opinions and input from people that have done something similar. Thanks!

Personally I'm going to a carb on my 91 Formula. It's 305 TBI car that I'm swapping a 388 (got the block back and it needed to be bored .060 over). I decided to go with a carb because it's what I've always run in the past and have had good luck with them.

Since I'm swapping out the motor, trans driveshaft and rear, switching to carb will be the least of my worries. I'm leaving the stock pump in the tank and will use a fuel pressure regulator to make the carb happy. Since the ECM and all emissions crap is coming out I'm using a MSD billet HEI for ignition. Good luck with either direction you take. I could care less about the whole induction debate, use what you want adn above all have fun with it :)

The only thing is you'll have problems passing inspection if they have an emissions test in your County. Not that carbs won't pass the sniffer test, carbs will run just as clean as fuel injected engines if they are tuned properly. It's just that the inspectors will sometimes fail it if all the original emissions equipment is not in tact.

But, if you can get by with it, carbs have always been good to me, and that's whats going in my 85Z. It's a lot simpler, especially for people who haven't had a lot of experience with computer controlled garbage.

Also, I have heard before that the stock fuel pump puts out way too much pressure, and that even with a regulator it's hard to send 33-35 lbs back to the tank (assuming that the stock pump is 40 lbs). All carbs need is a steady 5.5 lbs. But, I don't know, that's just what I've heard from other people...

He's right, if you do have emissions in your area it won't pass as I don't believe they offered a Carb model that year.. you have to stay with some form of FI for it to pass federal emissions laws.

If you don't have emissions.. I'm a carb fan.. and I hate computers in cars.. so I'm a bit biased. ;)
