View Full Version : Ugh! Starter Woes...

Hey Everyone... just looking for ideas here... The car's a '91 Formula with a T-56 retro'd in.

Here's the deal...
When the car got the new clutch, the starter wasn't aligned right anymore. Needed new shims. Now I don't understand why it needs to be reshimmed, but I'll go with it since it is a new flywheel and all.

Anyway, the car would start fine, but with a small smack sound because the starter wasn't shimmed right. Drove the car for three days, and suddenly, the car won't start. Starter spins, but doesn't engage.

Great.

First theory is that the bolts loosened themselves. Okay. So I jack up the car (woohoo! SFCs! can't get under the front, jack up the back... plenty of clearance! http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/wink.gif and attempt to tighten the bolts. No good. They're tight as can be.

So then I wonder if the solenoid is shot. Might be.

Not knowing, I consult the Haynes manual in the garage and it says that if the starter spins, but doesn't engage, that the 'overrunning clutch' in the starter is slipping, and that the starter needs to be removed and rebuilt.

So I gotta yank the starter. Whee. That means that I have to move the car. Not necessarily a problem. I can tow it with the truck, and start it that way (manual tranny and all). Then I can put it in the garage over the pit.

Called Trak Auto. $179 for a new starter, but with an $80 core charge, so it's not too bad. Just $100 I don't have. I also realize that I might not need a new one, but I have to get under the car to find out.

Any thoughts on what else it might be? Starter spins, no cranking going on, which I'm assumming means it's not engaging the flywheel.

Thanks!
Clint

Just to clarify, the starter spins, but it's NOT engaging the flywheel. The engine is NOT turning over.

Oh well. It appears that the starter's 'overrun clutch' is shot because the new flywheel is slightly larger in diameter than the previous one. No biggie.

New starter here I come. http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/wink.gif
