Hi all,

I've got a non starting condition, any help please.

The problem I still have is that the car, a 1985 pontiac firebird eng. code H LG4 5.0L, isn't starting the way it should. The starter rotates the engine and it seems like it's fires up but it doesn't. So far I checked the following: carb (std qjet) & carb gasket (replaced gasket and fixed some things on carb (tps & choke pull-off). This solved low vacuum. Took out all emmission including EGR (blockoff) and CAT(pipe). Replaced distributer cap (without replacing the coil), checked all sensors and replaced MAP & CTS. Replaced spark plug wires (8mm), set timing to 6 BTDC. Checked all the electrical connections I could think of. Checked if there was a spark (blue), fuel & air. And this was all done on a rebuilt engine (3 months ago, new bearings, pistons gaskets and so on).

Does anybody have an idea where to look next??? Car runs great when engine is started (after 30 minutes of trying) and sometimes the car starts immidiately.
doesn't seem temp related.

thanks in advance...

marald

That problem could be a lot of different things. I would have the ignition module checked for sure. I've had them go bad before and not work until the car cranks for a long time. Also you might want to change the spark plugs since the car has probably been flooded while you were cranking for a long time.

Hi,

My module hasn't been checked yet because there are no facilities here that can do that for me. The only thing I can do is buy a seond hand module and try that. But I found out that my oil was contaminated with lots of fuel, probably because of the hard starting I had a few weeks ago. I thought I had solved it but maybe this is the reason why it ain't starting again. If the oil is so thin it just drips of your dipstick when you take it out of the engine, could that be the problem f not starting the car? Maybe oil is to thin to be used in the hydrolic lifters or does it affect my compression so much it hasn't got enoough comp./vacuum anymore to leave the engine running. If so, do I have to do anything else than to change my oil????
