Over the last couple days, when I've been driving around, I think I've been able to smell some synthetic gear lube when I get out of my car and when I first start driving (probably due to the car being stationary). As anyone who has smelled gear lube before knows, it is a very distinct, rancid smell. I almost puked when I had to refill my tranny. But anyhow, I wanted to know what this could be indicitive of. I know I need to get my tranny serviced cause sometimes it's hard to get it into first gear, and other times, getting into reverse causes some major grinding, even though I am at a dead stop. But I really don't think this smell is a good thing. Anyone have any ideas of what I might be facing?

Could just be that your gear shift boot is busted, or maybe you've go a leak and it's just burning off. Or maybe your rear tranny seal is leaking. That's about the only easy stuff I can think of.

If you have drum brakes in the back, pull off the drums and check the axle seals for leaks.
