I have a few questions on turning a 91'Z28 w/ a 305 to a mean street machine w/ a 350. Are there certain steps I should follow to making a California smog legal car. Anything from what engines i should look at, suspension mods, Poissible mods to a (automatic w/ overdrive) transmission etc...? My car know is basically stock. I would like to a decently reliable street car that is blazing fast. Suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated and put to good use. Thanks.

First off living in CA myself i can tell you that they dont like this. There are laws about changing engines. The only leagal way i know of is to put a new 350 in your car (must be newer than your year, or same year) and since the 350 was an option in the camaro you can get away with it. However, i've heard of people just putting in 350s and them passing as 305s. As for the more tech stuff, I don't really know.

Basically those are the two major smog laws concerning engine swaps in CA. The engine you're putting in must be from a car as new or newer than yours, and the engine going in has to have been an option in your model year car. So for example, I couldn't put a 396 '69 Camaro engine into my car cause 1) It's much older than my car is, and 2) A 396 was never offered for my '87 Chevrolet Camaro.
Other than this you'd have to check individual components for their legality in CA. I know a lot of stuff Edelbrock does and CompCams do are advertised as 50 State legal. If I were doing an engine build up, I'd be looking for stuff that has this denomination. Other than that, it's all normal smog shit; cats, EGR stuff, all that crap.

Some states have a law that it is not considered an engine swap as long as it is from the same engine family, with all smog equipment hooked up.

This means that you could swap in a 400 for a 305, but you would have to have all the smog equipment on it, AND it would have to pass the 305 emissions standards.

So any SBC would work, but not a big block. Likewise in a stang, you couldn't swap a 302 for a 351 Cleveland, but you could for a 351 windsor, as long as smog equipment is retained.
