I have just came across some luck because this guys 89 iroc z 350 tpi that we are working on doesnt want pay for all the stuff we did and said that he will just sell it to us for like 3500!It has a brand new paint job and is really nice.dont like the interior much though.I like my car better so I am going to take the rear end, front grill, the cowl hood, the two 12 inch speaker system and the whole tpi system and comp.
if you didnt know already i have a mean 350 built up with ported out vortec heads but had to put the damn tbi on because i didnt have enough money to finish it right. So I figured this would get it running a lot better but not quite to its full potential.
But I have heard their is a problem using vortec heads with tpi intake.
Can someone give me some info on how to overcome this?it has something to do with the bolt patterns I think.
Are the vortec heads and tpi a mean combination?anyone here done it?

From what I heard Vortech doesn't make a head for TPI cars yet, but the will soon, BTW with an aluminum intake manifold, for the TPI with Vortech heads it would be killer.

You can't use TPI with Vortec heads simply because nobody makes an intake for it...
Just like LT1 heads, Vortecs use tall intake ports. Probably half an inch taller than a normal SBC head.
There are only 4 intakes that you can can get that will work on vortec heads. OEM TBI, Bowtie 4 barrel, Edelbrock RPM and Super Victor.
There are vortec heads that you can put normal intake on, they are not finished. the intake ports are not open all the way. Those heads SUCK because tall intake ports is one of the main reasons why they are hight flowing heads. There are also rummors that TPI intake will be awailable soon...
I hope this helps...

their was this site that i was on that would do each vortec head for 150 to make the tpi work.they said something about drilling holes in the heads.

There was anothing that I didn't have time to mention.
The bolt pattern on the intake is different.. Late model heads(TPI) have 6 holes on each side of the intake. holes 1,2,5 and 6 are perpendicular to the surface of the head. Holes 3 and for are vertical.
Vortecs only have 4 holes on each side of the intake.. in places of holes 1,2 and 5,6. All of the bolt holes are vertical...
By re drilling the head, you still have the intake runner that is too tall for the intake. Like I said, there are UNFINNISHED vortec heads that have the same hight of the intake runners as your normal SBC. They SUCK!!!
I know it's hard to understand without pictures.

how much power would I lose by using the heads off of the 89 iroc compared to ported vortecs?

Hang on dude! I just got the new Hot rod and someone makes a TPI manifold now to work with the Vortech heads! I'm not kidding I will give you details later, I don;t have the mag. with me.

I would absolutly not use stock heads if you got vortecs...
Carcraft compared Vortecs to Edelbrock aluminum heads... they flow just about the same.

hey 406,get me some info on that as soon as you can!thanks
I was wondering how much I would lose from l98 heads from ported vortecs?
right now I have vortecs with an edelbrock performer rpm intake also ported.just dont want to mess with the tbi anymore.
