If your gear ratio is a 2.73 or a 3.08, then it is a 7 1/2 in. carrier (also called a 2 series carrier).

If your gear ratio is 3.23, 3.42, or 3.73 you have a 7 5/8 in. carrier (3 series carrier)

Thanks corey... This really clears the mystery. The rear in my car is factory 3.73... So I guess it's a 7 5/8.

That is not neccissarily the case.
I have two different carriers in my garage right now. Both are original GM carriers with original GM gear sets. Both are 3.73:1. One is a 7 5/8, and one is a 7 1/2. Both carriers are "3 series" carriers.

Corey's info is not correct. 2 and 3 series carriers come in both rears.

ummm... ok then... Mybe someone can give me a better definition of what a 2 or 3 series carrier is. I thought it refered to the gear ratio attached to it. Like 2.xx or 3.xx

7 1/2, 7 5/8, 8 1/2 and so on are ring gear sizes. A 3 series carrier moves the ring gear closer to the centerline of the pinion compaired to a 2 series. (the higher numerically you go the smaller the pinion gets) Thats why you need the ring gear spacer to install aftermarket gears (3.42 and higher) onto a 2 seriers carrier. The difference in 2, 3 and 4 series carriers is where they place the ring gear in the housing.

Sorry I just reread your original post and have to add that the rear end housing and the carrier are two different things. The carrier is what the ring gear would bolt to.
