Smog Pump Question??

If I disconnect/remove the smog pump & assorted plumbing from my 1987 Z28 (305 4 barrel), will it cause the computer to set off the check engine light?

It probably wouldn't trip the SES light but if you still have the cat converter on the car it will ruin it.

simple thing to do now get rid of the ECM, get a vacuum advance distributer, an Edelbrok or holley 600CFM, non emitions carb, and finaly pull the bulb from the SES light.

and take a saw zaw and cut out the cat, and replace it with a hollow tube. http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

It will only hurt the cat if you still have the original 2 way, the one with the little tube running into it. If it has been replaced with a 3 way (which it probably has, but check to be sure) it will be no problem because that tube has been cut and left to hang off of the engine anyway.

BTW, according to the chilton manual, air is only pumped into the manifold during warm up, after the engine is warmed up, it pumps air into the cat, but if the cat has been replaced with a 3 way, the system essentially does nothing.

I was wondering the same thing...I bought a dynomax 1 inlet 1 outlet w/ a air tube cat. If I just disconnect the smog pump from the A.I.R. system will it hurt the cat?

I suppose you would have to call dynomax and ask them. I got a 3 inch cat from Catco (Summit Racing) and they say it can be used as a two or a 3 way cat. http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/confused.gif I guess I'll believe them until I know differently, and if it does ruin it then I'll just hollow it out.

I had an idea though, if the purpose of air injection is to heat up the cat to continue the the chemical reactions of pollutants, couldn't you just put a super hot thermostat in the car to heat the exaust enough to react in the cat, just to pass the but sniffers? I think they actually make 220* thermostats for our cars.

Hey maybe this is a stupid question but, if I put an smog pump delete pulley will it affect the a/c or is the a/c clutch in another location?
