Hey guys! I am looking at a 67 Camaro to purchase and one of the mods the guy selling it has done is put a Mopar Posi rear end in the car. I am familiar with GM but not Mopar. The gear is a 3.91 and he described it similar to the Ford 9 bolt ones. Any feedback on this?? Is this a good/bad rear end for this car? Or am I looking at ripping that one out and putting a GM back under it? The rest of the drive train is a Turbo 350 auto tranny and a 350 motor. The motor has considerable mods, the tranny has a B&M shift kit and was just rebuilt. I am going to have to drive for several hours to see this car, and I'm trying to do as much homework on it before I go as I can. I'm also trying to make a good dollar assesment on what I will be changing should I decide to buy the car. Thanks for any comments and feedback!

If it is a Dana 40 or 60 leave it in the car. Danas are way stronger then any GM rearend and are just as good as a ford 9" the only bad thing about them is their weight, (they are heavy!) other than that it is all up to how you want your car to be.

Thanks Bad! I have posted this question on several boards and the anwsers all seem to be somewhat similar to yours. It can be a good thing or a bad thing. It comes down to the fact of driving for 4 hours and taking a look at what has been done and getting some more docs. on the mod. The guy was pretty limited on the phone and has the docs. but I am one who has to see it. Even if it does seem like a strange mod, to me anyway, sounds like it could be a good one if done right. Thanks for the reply!

If he described it as being like a Ford nine inch then it probably isn't a Dana. It is likely a Chrysler 8¾". They have a removable center section like a 9".
They are about as strong as a GM 12 bolt so there shouldn't be any problems if it has been setup correctly. There are lots of aftermarket parts available for it too, although not as many as there are for the F 9".

Irock is right, if he compaired iy to a 9" it probably not a 44 or 60 but an 8 3/4. The Dana 60 is probably the stongest production rear there is, weight is its only set back. It's easy to tell if the rear end cover is like a 10 or 12 bolt GM its a 44 or 60. If it kind of looks like a 9" (everything comes out the front) its an 8 3/4
If its a 44 it would have a cover similar in size to a 10 bolt, 60's have a huge cover along the same size as the corporate 14 bolt used in 3/4 ton and larger trucks.

I was comparing the dana to the 9" as in strengh they are both just as strong as each other and the dana is the heavier of the two making this it's only disadvantage over the 9" with the exception of it is way easier to change gears in a 9" than the dana
