Hey, I blew up the engine in my '88 formula, and have put a ZZ4 block in. The problem, though, is that on the lower intake, 4 of the 12 bolt holes are at a slightly different angle than the other 8, while on the ZZ4 block, they are all the same.... So, If I'm going to swap out the lower intake, what years will fit on the ZZ4? also, will I have to get the upper part of the intake, too, or can I still use the old one?

The intake from an 86 should work for you.

if you get an aftermarket intake (like the edelbrock) then it will fit either way...
i think 88 was the first year they swapped manifolds...
also you can take your current manifold to a machine shop and have the bolt holes elongated[spelling?] or if you have some experience you could do it yourself (probably not if youre asking on here)

Am I missing something here? Doesn't the ZZ4 come equipped with the Vortec heads? If so, Scoggin-Dickey is working on a TPI base for vortecs, and I think Edelbrock will have one out soon too. That is about the only way you will be able to use the TPI, unless you re-drill and tap the heads, but then you still have port-location problems (vortecs have a raised-port configuration).

No, the ZZ4 has the aluminum Corvette L98 heads.

The 330hp 350 has the vortec heads, not a roller cam, 2 bolt, but is only $2000 and has the better heads in my opinion. Too bad GM doesn't just use the zz4 bottom end with vortec heads, the package would be cheap and make more hp than the aluminum heads with LESS compression. Oh well.

If i had to do it over,i would just buy the ZZ4 shortblock and get some good aftermarket aluminum heads. But was kinda needing a car to drive to work, and the AMX isnt much of a daily driver. Also this was an unplanned engine swap, other 350 broke a piston, cracked a head and busted a cylinder wall.not much left to rebuild! LOL.Overall its a REAL fun daily driver for my short trip to work, only have put 5000 miles on motor since i stuffed it in on sept 99.Buddy and i stayed late after work at the shop for a few nights and did the swap.

How do you feel the new GM 383 compares to the ZZ4. Would this motor be able to spin like a 350 with a good cam and heads. Or is it better suited for a school bus.
