Been meanin' to ask about this for a while. My car revs going from 2nd to 3rd. All other shifts are smooth, but when accelerating, it seems to throw itself into 3rd gear. Is this in any way normal? This is the first automatic I've had a lot of experience with, so I'm first to admit I don't know much about them.

You mean kinda like it's slipping or something. Probably needs a filter/fluid change.

Ok you have a 700R4 and I can tell you that 2nd and 3rd gear are the weak you could start by having the tranny serviced, and check for metal fragments in the pan, when you have it off, this include draining the TC, that way you know you have all new Fluid.

BTW that would be the perfect time to put in a shift kit. http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

LOL, nice hint there... http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/wink.gif Ok guys, thanks, will put a tranny fluid change on the rather large to do list. This is the first automatic that I've had, so it's a new monster for me. http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey, what's up? Actually, how many miles are on your tranny? And if there is a lot how many times has the fluid been changed? If it hasn't been changed a lot b4, you shouldn't change it now or your tranny will end up die'n http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/frown.gif. All that metal and stuff is worn into your gears or somthing and removing them will make it slip worse. My friend's tranny was like yours, so he changed the fluids, and it ruined his 700R4. So pretty much you have to get it rebuilt and this would be a good time for a shift kit. http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/smile.gif If I didn't make any sense, just ignore me http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/frown.gif Hope I helped http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/smile.gif

Makes major sence NOT to change the fluid, the best thing with 700's is when the do finally go they will shift and skip gears that are not there by playing with the throttle. I know I drove one back home about 20 miles in low gear, got the funnest look from a cop as I cruised by him at about 4000rpm's going 30mph. Change the fluid and you will learn the hard way just like me http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/biggrin.gif Also to clear up a myth, installing a shift kit to a tranny that is slipping does nothing to fix it.

Chances are that if it is slipping on the 2-3 shift the 3/4 clutch pack is nearly worn out. In all likelyhood you will need a rebuild soon. When the 3/4 pack goes out completely you will only have reverse, first and second.
The thing about not changing trannie fluid if it hasn't been changed in a long time is more of a misinformation thing.
Chances are if it hasn't been changed in a really long time the damage is already done. Changing the fluid doesn't hurt it, it is already hurt by that time.
Changing your fluid & filter probably won't help now and adding a shift kit won't help either.
Sorry to bring bad news http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/frown.gif but, you most likely need a complete rebuild. While you're at that you can get a shift kit installed then if you like. The higher fluid pressures from the shift kit will actually help the clutches live a longer life.
Also there are better than stock 3/4 clutch packs available, made from better materials than original and with more clutch discs. Also a kevlar band is a good cheap upgrade too.
After the rebuild be sure to change fluid & filter often. At least every 15,000 miles and your new trannie should last a very long time. http://www.3rdgen.org/ubb/smile.gif
One more thing,
If your really, really lucky, Your TV cable might just need adjusting.
If it is not adjusted correctly your transmission can slip. Get it checked soon. Every time your transmission slips it eats at the clutch discs.
If you are the luckiest person on Earth maybe this is all that is wrong.

The car has 132k miles on it. The tranny fluid hasn't been changed as long as I've had it (about 8 months). Not sure how often it was taken car of before.
Also another thing, when going into drive, the whole car jumps. Was told this might be a bad tranny mount, but have also heard it could be the tranny itself...
Oh this all just makes me love my wagon more and more... no problems at all with its 5 speed.
