OK heres the deal. I have recently bought a camaro for a project car. Its a 1985 Z28, I need to know what I should do for an engine. Keep the carbed 305 or put in a 350. I will be using this car as a project for now and then when its fixed it will be a weekend and a take to the drag strip car. I want at least 350-400hp before nos or supercharger. I dont want to put in a ls1 just cause I dont have money like that. If I should go with the 350, what is the best way to get one?? Buy a block and build up or what should I do. I also have a 90 IROC Z with a 305 tpi. Its frame is smashed (shown in picture from these links). I dont know what I will do with this car yet but will find a use. It is fun to do donuts in the field with.

The 1990 might be good for sway bars, springs, ,, a rear end,, if one has rear disc and the other doesn't etc..

If you want 350-400 hp go with a 350. The only use for a 305 is a boat anchor.

383 if you can swing it. I have built 2 350's that according to mags should have been putting out 400 hp. I never had them dynoed though. One went into a triumph spitfire and the other into a 65 chevy pickup. I built a fuel injected 383 back around 96 and had it in my 87 iroc that was a beast of a engine I loved every min of the almost 3 months I got to drive the old girl before she was taken from me. I have a truck right now with a mild build 350 that gets driven every day and has over 200,000 mile on the engine and trans and I have had no problems with that engine what so ever.
I also have a buddy that built a full roller 305 for his rs and he shifts that thing at 7 to 8K all the time and its still holding together. On roll on that thing rips and is pretty strong out of the hole. I think you would be happier with the 350 as to the 305 though.

well, since i own one of each engine.....from what ive heard the 305's have crappy cams, there's a 305 h.o. in my monte ss, it runs tight as its a recent rebuild, but ive heard 305s knocking and such, where my iroc has a 350 lt1, and i know for sure it will smoke my SS, id say 350s where to go if youre gonna go with a small block
hey speaking of which....if you were to have the wrong ECM (correct for the car, but wrong config) would it still run? with my monte SS i bought a stock ECM from another ss off of ebay, for a whole $10 the one that was in the car was either wrong....or damaged, it ran like crap...skipping.....stalling.....then when i got the ecm from ebay, installed it and it was a whole new car....ran better, doesnt stall, and has TONS more get up n go....so was mine damaged? or was it the wrong one? im confused as hell on this one......
anyone wanna shed some light on this????

Im building up a 350 right now and I wanted to get 400 horsepower, but the big thing stopping me is the cost...you're gonna spend atleast a couple thousand in good parts if you don't have the hook ups with parts. Just a cam kit and pistons/connecting rods has ran me $800. I could have saved some money but I won't have the results I want.
