I've got some coaxial Focal Polyglass 6 1/2" speakers I want to put in place of the stock 6x9s, but I found that the hole for the 6x9's is too big for the new speakers...there's not enough overlap to create screw holes in the existing metal. What is the best way to overcome this? I'm thinking a sheet metal plate to mount the speakers to, and then mount that plate to the existing sheet metal, but I don't have any of the necessary tools to do that myself. Any suggestions?

www.scosche.com

Scosche makes, or used to, a set of plastic adapters for this purpose. If they don't have them just do a google search for 6x9 to 6.5 adapters. I'm sure crutchfield carries them as well.

Don't bother...

First of all don't use sheet metal, plastic, or any other flimsy material! Go to a local hardware store like Home Depot, Lowes, etc and buy some 1/4" MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard). MDF is a very solid material that will not cause any type of vibration or resonating sounds produced by the speaker...

Use your old speaker as a template, lay it face down on the board and trace around it - do not cut it yet... Then take your new speaker's template and center it as needed and cut your circle, make sure the speaker fits nicely and drill the mounting holes. Remove the speaker and then cut your first template, drill the mounting holes - add your speaker, and then secure the template to the car. If you really want to make sure there will be no vibrations or resonance you may add a layer of dynomat, but not really needed when using MDF!

BTW, nice speakers :) Even Focal's cheapest speaker is really one of the best out there! Just make sure you give them enough *clean* power! Using a cheap amp or HU to power them will make them sound pretty crappy compared to how they could sound...
