My 89 5.7 needs new head gaskets, can anyone tell me what to expect to pay to have them replaced?

You're looking at 18-20 hours of labor and $100 or so in parts, plus machine work if the heads are messed up, or new heads altogether. So basically at least $1500.

The engine is a reman crate motor, installed about 21K miles ago, is running like new. Drove less than 2 miles when the white smoke started, so I don't beleive there is any engine damage. What would the cost be for the gasket replacement only? Thanks.

I spoke to a mechanic today, he said that it may be the intake manifold gasket that's bad. I will be dropping the car off latter tonight. I always thought that if you had an intake gasket leak, the result would be a vacuum leak only. My IROC is mixing anti-freeze into the oil. White blinding clouds coming out of the exhaust. Has anyone ever heard that an intake manifold leak causing coolant leaking into the oil? I hope that's the problem, obviously it'll be cheaper to repair.

water that usually goes thru the intake would leak into the lifter valley and then into your oil pan, thus mixing coolant with oil... and water will also get sucked into your intake ports on your heads and go into your combustion chamber causing the white smoke.

Cost was 650.00, also the temp sensor had to be replaced, the fans weren't coming on when they were suppose to, which is what caused the engine to overheat. You were on the money, MonteC. Work was done a couple of weeks ago, car is running as good as ever.
