'82 Z28 with 350 & 4 speed manual runs 3750 RPMs at 70 MPH.
Can a five speed replace the four speed? If so where can I find one?

you can find a t5 in the classifieds on tgo or check ebay. You could try your local junkyard also. They don't hold all that much power though, so don't think of putting it behind a stout 350 unless you want to break it or rebuild it.

Thanks for the tips-especially about the relative strength of the t5. Probably designed more for the 6 cylinder engines.

you could do what i'm doing.... G force rebuild kit.
Their gear set, a rebuild kit, and their upgraded input shaft and that should be good for 600hp/600trq on drag radials in a 3400 lb car i believe

tremac, if you can afford it they manufacture a five speed that is a direct replacement for the borg warner, its will handle either 475 or 525 lbs. of torque, if you are making less than 300 and dont plan to go above that go with a an 89-92 five they should handle 300lbs. of torque as rated

but they are certainly not cheap.

Good things to consider! This car is not for "competition" but more of a collectors item. Body is restored and most of the interior. 350 long block replaced the original 305 plus a new Edelbrock Performer intake and carb. which give it plenty of juice for my needs and increased the mpg to 18. All the computer stuff is where it should be (in the landfill) and it now has a real dual exhuast. We just want this sweet ride to function well at highway speed. I don't criticize those who are into competion but that's just not where we're at with this car. I do need input from people experienced in this area about the pros & cons of switching to a five speed to reduce rpms. The original four speed is well worn and needs rebuilt or replaced before I would trust it for any long distance trip. I also appreciate tips on locating reliable parts. Kansas has very few in salvage yards- everyone has one parked out behind the shed but won't turn loose of them. Thanks again!!

if you want a t-5, or a t-56 for that matter, dyno your engine or at least find out an estimate on torque, if your around the 300 mark hit up an old 89+ Camaro, Firebird or Corvette. T-56 will go for a little more and the tremac i saw for about 2 grand, geared better than the borg warner t-5, but its geared for racing not gas mileage

Will do. I will start by calling the company that rebuilt & installed the 350 long block. They might have the info I need without further testing or know who to go to for a reliable dyno test. Thanks again for suggestions.
