ok my first question is, what year did third gens get electric fans?? or did all of them get electric fans?

ok the fan doesnt come on in taras 84z. i looked all over for a fan relay or for a fan temp sensor. lets just say i got no where fast.

the fan in her car doesnt look stock, i mean it looks like a stock 3rd gen fan but hers is tie wraped at the bottom and the wires are spiced into some existing wiring. bottom line is it looks like someone did a hack job fan install.

what i need to know is what controlls this fan, what tells it to come on and where is it located. the fan works, i tested it. somewhere in there is a broken link not letting the fan come on when the temp goes up, i let it go up to 240 and the fan wont come on. btw i fixed the cheesy splice job.

need a little help, to clear this up.

on my 90 rs the coolent temp senser has some to do with it. it tells the ecm to turn the fan on. also if i rember right there is a fuse up by the battery. this is all on a FI car. my 83 had your standard fan on it so it won't tell me jack. i'd say see if it has a coolent temp senser. and see if that is bad.

P.S. have you verified that the fan works?

thanks dude i think u gave my brain a jump start. there is a temp sensor that goes to the ecm and there is a seperate one that goes to the guage. i think if i repace the ecm temp sensor the fans will work.

but im still curious if the 84z's came with electric fans stock.

Not all, but some, single fan applications did indeed come in 84.

the ECM has NOTHING to do with her fan coming on.

the fan relay has constant power.... and the relay is grounded by the thermal switch in the head (passenger side in stock apps)

when the thermal switch gets hot enough, it goes to ground.... that kicks the relay on, kicking the fan on.

the ECM isnt even part of the circuit.

Later 3rdgens had all of the relays on the driver's side firewall. My '84 didn't have an electric fan, so I can't help you there.

You could always run a new power lead, relay, and a temperature switch, bypassing the questionable wiring you have now..

Here's what I did: cut all wires leading from the fans, should be 3. Buy a really cool lighted switch from any auto store. Connect the power, acc, and ground to the switch...turn on and wala. Turn on when in town...off on the highway.

ive never seen an electric fan on an 84. my 85 did have one though. and it was on the drivers side. me personally i would never put a fan on a toggle switch. just my .02 cents. what if one time not thinking b/c your obsession over paris hilton you forget to switch it on..paris hilton aint worth your motor trust me we all seen the video. i use a grand national fan switch and jumped my relays so both come on at the same time in my 86 w/ dual fans. the part # is gn-555 its a grand nation fan switch that will turn your fans on at 195* instead if the stock way to high*.

A fan draws a lot of amperage...i wouldn't be running that through a cheesy lighted NAPA switch.

Wow I remember this thread.

The fans not coming on finally caused the car to overheat big time yesterday, I had to beat the crap out of the old fan motor yesterday with a tire iron just to get it to start going again.

But a new fan motor is in as of this afternoon and all seems to be well.

you can run a fan with those switches,as long as you use a relay you'll be fine,i've had a set up like that for 2 trouble free years :)

yea runing it through a relay is not what he said to do but would be the way to do it properly.

Isn't that better served in your fucking car!? What good does a picture of an electric fan on a radiator do? Seriously.

And BTW, Nightrider, you can do both. My relay is activated by a switch inside my car. Switch on, relay gets power and fans come on. Switch off, relay gets power cut and fans shut off. It's a very simple concept isn't it? Just cause yours isn't done that way doesn't mean mine can't be. You're not the God of 3rd gens, you know. People can do things different ways from you. It's OK. Don't take it personally.
