Hey Im not a regular on this site, but I need some help, Im not used to this northern weather up here in Pa while Im going to Wyotech. Anyways, it got down to -5 the other morning and I was in a hurry so I didnt have time to let my car warm up, I started driving, got about a mile down the road and the temp was up at 190...Turned around and when I got on my street the guage was pegged at 250, I didnt run that hot long enough to hurt anything, and it still runs fine now, But after school I checked it out and there seems to be coolant pouring out where the freeze plug is on the block, I cant see if it truly is the freeze plug until I pull my header out the way or get it on ramps (cant get it on ramps in the garage, and there is snow on the ground outside) My question is, Is it possible to replace a freeze plug on a 78' 350 block in a 82 Z? Or am I going to have to jack the motor up some? Cause if Im jacking it out, I am going to replace motor mounts at the same time... I just want to know how hard and what is involved with changing a freeze plug and if there is any certain types or brands I should use. Thanks

Well I was just checking it out in the garage...Is there just 1 plug on each side on a 78' block? I dont remember when I had it on the stand to build the top end...I know there is 1 under the motor mount but not sure if there are anymore, I need to confirm if it is indeed a freeze plug...

There is also a freeze plug more towards the back of the bock. It could also be a cracked head.

Not a cracked head, these aren't aluminum heads and antifreeze is coming from much lower, As it looks not its the front plug and its running down the subframe, And I know Im gonna have to jack up the motor to get to that one...

Um, the head doens't have to be aluminum to crack it.
The likely hood of a freeze plug just going bad is rare.

Did you have water in the engine or antifreeze ? With sub zero temp, you may have cracked the block itself if you didn't have antifreeze in there.

Well it was just a freezeplug like I thought, I had to jack up the motor to get it, as it was the one behind the motor mount. Got it all back together and runs awesome, no damage on the heads from heat like I thought.

Thats good to hear... I had a freeze plug leak on the front side of my motor... The machine shop had a bur when the put it in so it leaked. Then after that my passenger head cracked. That was a bad few months. But being 16 i had some money to spare on some alluminum heads and new bearings. Of course i worked 60 hour weeks to do so in the summer :)

I know how it is, I dumped $1500 in my motor the week of my 18th birthday. Between that, gas, insurance and daily spendings most of my money for my summer was gone!
