Hood law in NJ

Is it illegal to drive without a hood? I've heard so many different answers to this. I don't see why it would be illegal if it is. Anyone wanna freshen me up on this subject? And if it is illegal what kind of tickets would I get for this?

I asked a cop this cause I wanted to go down to a junkyard for a working cowl induction Firebird hood they had, but wanted my stock one too. The cop basically said that there is nothing that they can write out a ticket for, but expect to be pulled over whenever a cop sees you.
