Well I was given this car, a 1989 IROC-Z with a 350 TPI and the auto in it. It's in alright shape I suppose.

One problem I have is that it runs REALLY hot. I mean, it hits the red zone on the gauge more than I'd like to even count. Checked the thermostat, was fine, even replaced it. I noticed only 1 fan comes on and only when the temp reaches the line between 220 and 260. Then it shuts off at 220. Only ONE fan comes on. And I can't tell if it's in fast or slow speed.

The other problem I have is that the car runs fine at any part throttle position up to about 4800-5000rpm, then starts to sputter, and feel like its just not running right. It also does it at WOT, and backfires a little bit.

I'm gonna check the timing on the car to see if thats messed up. There is no SES light on in the car (the bulb does work, comes on when I turn the key) so I have no clue.

The car does have a SMALL cam in it and some shorty headers with a Catted Y and the O2 sensor is plugged in.

Thanks guys for any advice.

220 is about the temp the fans are supposed to run at. You can buy an aftermarket fan switch that will run them colder though. Both fans should come on, but only with the engine running. If the key is on but the engine is not running only one will come on. You could try switching the fan connectors, both fans are identical. That may help diagnose whether it is a bad motor or wiring.

You may want to check the wire that goes to the fan switch. It is in the passenger side head between two of the spark plugs. You can just take the wire off and ground it to the body. Both fans should come on, with the car running. I also had a problem with the wiring harness that is near the radiator on the passenger side of the car. The connector had melted inside, insulating the wires so they couldn't make contact.

The fans only have one speed. It's either on or off.

For the backfire/misfire, it sounds like it's not getting enough gas. Changed the fuel filter yet?

how is the water pump for the coolant. also you might wanna pressurecheck your radiator cap and change your fluid. thats all im thinkin of if your watter pump aint workin that good your thermostat may be opening but the coolant isnt circulating so it aint doing its job
