I left a previous post asking about placing a 350 in my 91 firebird formula, auto. right now it has a 305 in it completely stock except for a cold air intake. should i supercharge the existing engine, and what other mods should i do to it, or should i go ahead and go for high compression and get the 350.
I am looking for around 350 horsepower at the tire, lol, right now it has like 180. damn emissions.

i would go with the 350. a 350 with a tpis zz-9x cam and tpis miniram would easily do that. add in 11.5:1 compression and aluminumn heads and you'll have a screamer. i have a 383 with zz-9x cam and miniram and it makes 530 hp

ok now i have decided to go with the 350, i already have the block, it is an iron block out of a 1st gen camaro completely bare. has anyone else here built a budget performance 350. If so tell me what parts i should start going for, i am just looking for a second opinion, but i am definatly getting aluminum heads, and i am looking to spend no more than $3,000 on this engine. And i am not going to put NOS or forced induction in it.

he can't afford anything from TPIS if he's on a budget. Everything they sell is really expensive, too expensive IMHO.
is that 1st gen bare block a 4 bolt main block? I'm hoping it is. You'll have to rebuild it with all old style stuff (hydraulic) unless you put in retrofit roller products.
you have the 305 tpi in your car right now correct?

i have a 305 tbi but the car has room for a tpi computer and i was hoping to build a 350 tpi, but if not tpi than atleast mpfi, and yes i believe it is a 4 bolt block.

you could have bought a stock tpi 350 for around 350-400 bucks and started with that. Just find all the parts cheap off thirdgen.org or ebay.

You can build a 350 for $3000 easy. Well if your building the motor or someone you know is and wont charge you that much to build it. Just help your friend out because thats where the fun begins. When you get your block and your $3000 call Summit or Jegs and tell them how much money you are willing to spend and what you want. They will help you with putting your motor together. Personally if I where you i would go carberated. Its cheaper. Have fun.

carb is great for cheap easy HP... however if you want some nice driveability on the street, then I would stick with an EFI setup.

since you are working with a bare block, why not get a scat 3.75"crank,a set of the new scat 6"rods with 7/16" capscrews and a set of wiseco flattops.add a set of good flowing 72 cc heads,a performer rpm manifold and the holley that matches your combo(750 vac sec or dp)?make sure the block is sound and have the parts balanced, add the cam of your choice and easily have 400-450 hp and more torque than your tires will ever handle?may be just a bit over 3k but not much if you're thrifty, and shop ebay.
just a thought

I know you said Aluminum heads, but you can't beat the bang for the buck of a stock Vortec cast iron head. they can be had for under $500 new for the pair. Then look toward the Edelbrock RPM Air Gap manifold if your going carbuerated. If you're keeping TPI, look at Scoggin Dickey's vortec lower intake manifold and maybe the Holley Stealthram Upper plenum. should be good for the HP you're looking for. Maybe upgrade the valvetrain and add a nice cam... presto... you're under budget.
