...as the title tsays, i'm building a budget right now. got the car, got the motor. 355 with a few toys, i'm putting a new crank and rings in her now. so heres the question.

what to do for the trans.....it has a perfectly running 700R4 in it now, but i'm not quite sure how it's going to handle some power comming at it. and the local repair shop wants $900 for the clutch pack and rebuild and yadda yadda yadda...

or, i get a th350, pop a vacuum line on it and loose the OD gear..

now, besides the "your have to change this and that...what do you guys suggest?

idea's?

And lose the super high first gear.

I think the 700-r4 is rated at like 400 or 450 lb. ft. of torque from the factory, so unless you are making at least that much, I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe get a TransGo shift kit.

As long as the engine is out though a torque converter from a 4.3 liter s-10 would be a nice extra.

transGo shift kit, i'll look that one up. This motor came out of a 68 camaro, so it had a good home. but to be honest, i'm not sure she was kicking 400 anything

i was going to get a 2500 - 3000 rpm torque converter, B&M or some $hit like that :) why the 4.3 s-10?...

it's been awhile sence i undertook something like this, and going old to new is fun. thats why i ask...knowledge is a good thing ;)

why the 4.3 s-10?... you can get the s10 one wayyyyyy cheaper at any parts store and its got a better stall speed than a stock one.(plus b&m tends to suck monkeyballs)the s10 one is gonna be like 1/3 the price of an aftermarket one . go to autozone.com and see how much one is for , lets say, a 96 s10

i'd have to go with username on the torque converter. if you're gonna get a stall get a cheap one from autozone... they're only like 120 bucks. Unless you're gonna buy a real nice one just use that or the s10 like he said. B&M and TCI are cheap but they just don't put the power to the ground from what EVERYBODY has told me. Torco makes a sweet TQ for 550.

As for the tranny question... go with the 700r4. You can get a pro-built rebuild kit that comes with everything (i think it even comes with a transgo shift kit) for 530 bucks. You have to do it yourself but it's alot cheaper then paying 900+ at a shop. The 700r4 has the lowest first gear of all the trannys and it has OD. You can't beat that...

Actually I've heard that the 93-94 s-10 is supposed to have a slightly higher stall speed, but double check the part numbers at the parts store, they may be the same.
