ok, heres the deal. Put the new cam in last fri. Just started getting on it tonight and noticed a big problem. Whenever it gets past about 5200 rpms, it starts making some wierd sounds and almost stuttering. kind of a wierd sound, and the rpms start stuttering. Now I backed off the timing, and that seemed to help some, but it still noticable. I almost think its pre-detonating, but I dont know. I do have a high compression engine, but no guesses on what the exact #'s are. So any ideas?

What kind of Lifters do you have? I think hydrolic lifters will do that after a certian RPM range. If the RPM's are too high, Hydrolic lifters need time to stay pumped up with oil, Especially when high lift is used.

Changing camshafts won't change the comp. of the motor. How much lift does the cam have? If the lift is too great you can run into valve spring problems such as coil bind or maybe the springs are too weak. This will be noticed at higher RPM's.
As long as everything was installed correctly.....timing marks lined up, rocker arms adjusted properly, cam break-in procedures followed.
You should run anywhere from 30 to 36 degrees of total timing.
I run hyd. lifters in my motor and I rev it to 6500, no problem.
Just my 2 cents.
