Thanks for the advice anyway TC :)

I walked into the City Of Fort Worth Municipal Court building today, thinking that it would probably get dismissed. I figured they'd look up how much the fine is, not be able to find the dollar amount, and just throw it out.

I was right :thumbup:

Code #47 Exhibition Of Acceleration is listed as a Class B Misdemeanor as of Sept. 1 here http://www.fortworthgov.org/municipalcourt/fineschedule.pdf

The cashier came back to the window and said "Well today is your lucky day, our city police do not have the authority to write tickets for a Class B, so your ticket is being dismissed."

'Who DOES have the authority to write an Exhibition Of Acceleration ticket???', I asked.

"County Sheriffs, DPS. Have a nice day!"

I'll be damned, you learn something new every day. I wasn't aware that they stuck exhibition of speed into the new street racing statute. That's scary, dude! That IS a class B!!! You were REALLY lucky! That officer could have arrested you for that and sent you through the county court system. They CAN'T write tickets for anything higher than a class C. I'm gonna spread the word at work. I don't think any of us were aware of that major change!

§ 545.420. Racing on Highway

(a) A person may not participate in any manner in:

(1) a race;

(2) a vehicle speed competition or contest;

(3) a drag race or acceleration contest;

(4) a test of physical endurance of the operator of a vehicle; or

(5) an exhibition of vehicle speed or acceleration or to make a vehicle speed record.

Be careful with this, it's wrong information. Any officer within that county can arrest you for any B or above that happens in their presence when they are on duty. It's not just sheriffs or DPS. It could be a campus cop!

right, but only if they're educated enough to know the law ;)

You could, of course, keep your mouth shut too :)

Exactly. Would you believe we didn't even get a legislative update this year? What we know of the new laws comes from what we downloaded ourselves from the internet. I know that peeps at my department have been writing tickets for exhibition since last Sept.

heh, I'm not about to arrest someone for exhibition. What a dumbass county level charge.

You are a reasonable man, Pete.

Every cop needs to have your attitude.
