I own a 91 black z28 and it stock came with a 700R, well somebody took out the 700R and put in a borg T5 which is weak and they didnt know what they were doing but i bought the car anyway, so in knowing that i need a trans swap because the t5 can only handle 275-305 torque and a 91 z28 with 5.7l has stock 345 lb/ft torque and i was wondering if anyone has done the swap from a 700R/T5 to a T56 6spd manual and would be willing to give me details about time? cost? exact parts needed? and any problems or good things that occured from doing the swap?

since you already have a 5 speed in there , i would think it'd be a little easier, since you wouldn't have to run the new pedals.

the link above explains things in detail. I did not put the 6 speedin the car myself. but I know the things i needed to buy.

I also recommend not buying a used transmission. but if you have to, you will need the flywheel resurfaced,

and the package that sells the pressure plate and the other things that go w/ it. I 'm not remmebering what the other things were called. i think it came w/ the clutch fork and the clutch disc also.

I also bought a B&M shifter which came to like 170 bux.

not to mention the spohn T56 crossmember.

w/ the transmisson be sure to get the hydraulics also.
... hope that answers a few questions
.

look around for the best deal on the t56, i think i spent too much cash. look around on the Camaroz28.com board for pretty good deals.
good luck.

What are you planning to do with the car that you think you need a stronger tranny? I have been drag racing mine 4 summers and i'm still running the original T-5.

I only started having problems with it this summer, but I have really abused it too :growl:

6spd would be wicked though

If I ain't broke....don't fix it! Make it go faster first...then break it and fix it.

oh i know im just trying to get the best money wise because if i can keep the rebuilt t5 intact and in working order i can sell the complete system and make some money back on what im going to spend on a t56 transmission, and im going to make it pretty powerful more than enough to bust the t5 on a first drag run, hopefull ill build it up to around 450-500hp and keep it emission and street legal lol! But im just trying to do the smart thing first which is strengthen the trans and the rearend before i build the motor up that way the car is complete so that when i put my plan of attack on the engine the rest of the car will be ready to handle the power and i wont have to worry!!

That is a plan if you can afford to do everything at once I guess. The first and second thing I broke was the rearend.

No fun fixing your car at the track so you can drive home on Sunday. Those were the days :chuckle:
