I want to set up dual residancy in Michigan, so that I can register my car there... Instead of IL. How do I go about doing this???

Typically your "official" residence will be where you are registered to vote. You cannot have dual residency between states.

so if i register to vote at my a relatives house in one of the few counties that still do not need smog tests, i can still have california plates, not have to deal with smog testing, and still have my permanent address on my drivers lisence?

Um, no. You have to prove your address when you register.

Hey Firecop,
I just moved in a town near you, and I was at the registrar's office on Tuesday. She asked me if I had any identification with my new address on it. I said no and she said okay. She never even asked to see my ID with the old address.

how about having a relative register the car in their name, in their state ?

lets put it this way:
when you have a texas drivers license, and a bike registered in your name in south carolina, they ask alot more questions.
i got off 3 times because i said that i was there just for the summer, and i only got a texas license because no one would hire me locally with a south carolina license.
however, thats not QUITE legal... i donno how much trouble you can get into doing that, but there is some.
im going to get a SC license and register my car here in SC at my parents house, then take it back to texas... that way, i dont need a front plate, no inspections, ect..
if they ever ask, im still just vacationing with friends... they get picky and i tell them i do the road trip back and forth... they get pickyier and i have a few plane tickets that show that i do travel..
laws vari from state to state, but you have to be in that state for so long to be a resident or somting i think... im not positive..
MrDude, just make sure you keep your license plates current. My bread and butter is out of state expired plates. People register them in other states and figure they're safe for life in Texas. Uh uh, same laws apply. I write several of those a night. As for the inspection, with the current database setups we have, you could probably get away with that forever. Texas doesn't track them very well at all.

My best friend has all his vehicles registered in Arkansas because there are no smog laws, no front plate required and the plates are about $60 less. He keeps a post office box down there and has his mail forwarded to his IL address.
