ok, I'm putting new 6x9s in my 91 camaro. I took out the old speakers, disregarding the postive and negative electrodes. I have 2 wires, one consistent color, one with a white stripe. Which is positive? I could've sworn it was the one with the stripe. What kind of damage can be caused by crossed wires? And what could explain my speakers being "fuzzy" sometimes and great at others. Perhaps it's my ghetto hook up. Tie cord together, twist, electrical tape. Anyway lemme know

when i crossed my wires on my subs, it sounded really fuzzy. I don't remember what wire was + and - . I'll take a look tomorrow. What brand speakers did you put in?

I put in infinity's 6953i's, 300w peak, 100w rms. 3 way, slick little 6x9s. Yeah, please tell me if I messed that up, thanks.. Oh is there a less ghetto way of hooking them up than I did? lemme know

i solder my wires together. then eletrical tape, just twisting them together will hurt performance.

Just cross reference what the factory used for pos and neg in the front speakers. There is no true deffinition of which wire is pos and which is neg. It is usually the smaller slide on connector on a set of speakers that is the negative.

for future reference, anything Ohio related, post it in the midwest forum. If you want answers to something from anyone, post in the lounge.

No one uses any of the forums except the lounge really.

well ok first things first if you cross the wires you will probably blow a speaker on gm cars speaker wire colors go as this dark wires are pos light color wires are neg try switching them and see if that helps

I ran into this problem on my 86 and I tried speakers both ways one wire hot other cold then switch em, I heard no difference, cranked em both up and nothing no blow no fuzzy so I was like wtf????
I know on alot of other vehicles and stuff they won't play as loud sound aweful or wil blow but in mine they didn't do anything different. Kep in mind when I done mine it had speakers hooked up but no head unit I put in a new headunit and was testing to see what wires went to what and how they sounded and it didnt do anything no difference was really weird.

I also hook up my wires w/ crimp connectors. They are easy to use and work great but you gotta make sure and crimp em enough. I have a set of wire cutters/strippers/crimper pliers all in one deal can get em at autozone and they wouldn't crimp tight enough for speaker wires so I used a bare of channel locks or vice grips normal pliers anything like that to get em tighter. As an extra measure I tape it all up after that. I also have alot twisted together and taped I don't care what anyone says it works, alot of ppl do it and have done it for years and still have it work fine for years, i hear or see no lack in performance by doing it or anything. If done right and w/ the right tape they won't come apart the tape will shrink and make a nice tight fit arround your twisted up spot. Another option would be a different kinda of connector a quick splice you can get them at autozone and stuff too. You slide your wire in one end and slide it over the other and then theres a metal blade you shove down w/ pliers then a lil plastic cover that snaps over it to seal it all up they work nicely.

if you vross the wires on a speaker it wont blow, they will be 180 degrees out of phase.if you want to know which is postive pull the deck out and check it there.there is no "hot" wire for speaker outputs its an ac signal with dc riding on top.
