Hello everyone,
My name is Mike and I live in central North Carolina. I currently own 5 Berlinetta's. Only one is being driven however. I bought the other 4 for a parts supply so that I could keep my daily driver going. Right now I have it parked due to the discovery of stress cracks on the driver's side subframe. I thought I knew a lot about my Berlinetta but I was sadly mistaken. My friend John who owns a site dedicated to the Berlinetta informed me of GM's engineering "boo-boo" and subsequent fix.
As a result I spent a few hours in the salvage yard yesterday gleaning frame braces off of an '86 IROC in order to stiffen my ride. I have an appointment this week at a garage to have the cracks MIG welded. I also will have the same shop install these 6 additional braces including a fatter sway bar from the same car. I anticipate my Berly will be better than new. I look forward to driving the car with one hand as in the past I had to use both hands just to steer the damned thing. It was all over the road!
For those of you out there who have the same "loose steering" problem or own a 1984 or 1985 Berlinetta I suggest you look closely at the subframe around your steering box. If there are cracks anywhere near it, you need to do this upgrade. It is DANGEROUS for you to drive your car with these cracks! Anyone needing help with this subject please contact me and I will be happy to provide the location and description of these braces along with pictures supplied to me by John.
For those of you who dislike Berlinetta's please remember to be mature and respect others. I know the Berlinetta is not a very well liked car. Those of us who choose to own one do so because of the "cool factor" invloved. Attacking someone simply because of what they drive is not cool. MM

Greetings. I have an '84, and I'd like to know if the cracks on the subframe occur in any particular location near the steering box, thanks.

Sure thing,
E-mail me directly (georgeandromeo@aol.com) and I will send you detailed photos of the area and the braces needed to fix this problem. I have had my Berly repaired and it handles great! I have been meaning to update my post. Mike M.
