Well gotta 89 305 camaro, heard most people tell me that chevy upgraded to 28 spline axles that year, however I have also been told by a few that its 26 and 1990 was the first year that chevy did these changes. Just curious cuz i wanna replace my 3.08s with 3.73s and a limited slip differential, and I dont wanna go through the trouble of actually unbolting the rear end housing etc etc. Any help would be appreciated, thanks guys

1989 was a big year for the F-bodys. Gm changed the 5 speed T5s to the world class T5s. Changed the axles to 28 spline. They started using the anti theft pass key system. They also changed the TPI system to speed density instead of mass air. If you are planning on changing the differential you can use the same one that is in the 4th gens. It is stronger and locks up both tires alot better. It bolts right up in the 3rd gen rears too.

Thats the plan but im guessing theres no way to know if I got 26 or 28 spline axles.

Just slide the axles out and look.. it takes like 5 minutes.

Take off a wheel. Remove rear end cover. Unclip the axle. Pull out axle. Count splines.

My '89 RS convertible had the 26 spline axles in it. I just did a SLP take out Zexel torsen swap, and got a pair of 28 spline axles from the junk yard. I went from an open end 2:73 to the Zexel with 3:73s, what a difference!!!

hey.
if it was an SLP take out unit, then its not a zexel. SLP puts Zexels into the SS and takes out the stock unit. If you meant its the same unit that SLP uses then thats cool. But the take outs that SLP sells are stock 4th gen rears for 100 bucks

98 and up F-bodies use the Zexel.... SLP uses the heavy duty version..... www.SLPonline.com

ah ic...my bad. I thought the Zexel T2 was what was used period and the stockers just had some auburn unit or something.

Well still good to know...it means im putting the heavier duty version in my car then.

I don't think that you even have a 10-bolt. The 3.08 rear was a rarity in the 9-bolt rears. Check out your option code for the rear end, also you can look at the rear end on the bottom of the housing in the center. If it says Borg Warner then you are running 9-bolt.

Im not that dumb, i counted the bolts, theres 10 not 9. Plus I got my gears and posi in already so no help needed anymore guys thanks, 26 spline, and the RPO code told me it was 3.08s, but those are gone, 3.73s now and auburn limited slip w00t.
