View Full Version : Harmonic Balancer?

Heard a clanging noise from under the hood the other day, turns out my harmonic balancer is loose ('86 2.8 MPFI).

Provided I keep the revs down, it doesn't clang; but the engine sounds a little strange and I can swear I'm using more gas. I imagine the timing of the spark would be somewhat off considering the balancer is no longer doing its job right.

Won't have time to do much about it until the end of the week, am pussyfooting the car around trying to keep it under 2500 rpm. Am I likely to do damage driving it this way?

hey pretty much no one posts here anymore..just about everything is in the lounge now. Stop driving the car! can you really afford to crack a crank? if its loose, then tighten the bolt....its not hard. of course, it may have come loose because of something more serious. It will take you 2 minutes to learn whether its just loose, and tightens up or screwed up....why risk it? of course, if you are looking for a reason to swap in a 350 or bigger, then keep on driving

It's probaly not loose but died of old age when i still had the 6 in mine i heard a clanging almost like a fan i finally found out when i pulled the harmonic that there was absolutely no rubber left between the two metal pieces My dad said he had seen them break or crack but never disintigrate liek this did i got pics of it somewhere.
