View Full Version : TPI runs rich

My car is running very rich and the idle is kind of rough. I can't figure out why. There are no codes or SES light. The MAF, o2, and IAC are all new. And the scan data that I have seems OK. Fuel pressure is at 48psi and holds fairly well at shutdown. I also tuned it up not long ago. Does anyone have any ideas or has had similar problems? It also seems to drive fine, but I have to smog it soon and this just came up. I have attached the scan data.
The car runs in closed loop now and is still rich(o2 doesn't switch rich/lean). Also there are no codes. I can't get it tyo give a SES light. Here's the scan data:
Air Divert: ON
Air Flow: 9-10 G/S
Air SwitchFF
Batt. V:13.9
BLM Cell: 4
BLM:108
Collant temp: 92C
EGR pos.N
EGR DC(%):0
IAC:9
Idle RPM:75
Injector P/W: 1.5-1.6
Integrator:100
Knk. Ret.:0
Knk. Sig.:NO
Loop: Closed
LV8:60-64 (switches)
MAF:9 G/S
MAT: 34C
o2 cross: 0
o2 state: Rich
o2 V: .81 (doesn't switch)
PPSW: 13.0
Prom ID: 2391
RPM: 800
Spark Adv: 24*
TPS: .48
All these were taken with the car at operating temp. I also checked the injector wires with noid lights, and they all are fine.
I am completely baffled by this problem, and I am running out of solutions real fast. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Judging by all of the replies, I guess there's not many people who actually visit this board.

That, and no one knows alot about the technical aspect of fuel injection.

tell me a little more about the situation, you said that the o2 stays at .81 volts?
Your blm at idle is 110?
First I would try pulling out a few pounds of fp at a time then scan the car again to see if it helped. Also, does it Idle rough for the first minute and a half after startup and does it finally smooth out?
also how much vacuum are you pulling at idle? a vac leak on your fp reg maybe?

btw are you running a custom chip?
if so, who programmed it?

Yes, it does idle real rough for the first minute and a half. Then it smooths out. Vaccum is 18-20 (varying at idle).I've tried lowering the FP with no real results. The chip I have I bought from SLP. It's just their standard cheapo chip. I've also tried the stock chip, but that made little difference.

yeah, sounds like you got shafted on that chip.
Did you change to bigger injectors or jack the fp way up?
I think I can fix your problem.

The injectors are stock. They were just cleaned and flow tested back in March. The fuel pressure is at 48psi, which is about where I've always had it. The chip was $80, so I didn't expect much.

I got a chip from street and preformance and now my idle is the same way and it also runs rich. The new chip is the reason for this?

My car ran fine with this chip before. If your car just started running bad after you installed the chip, I would definately contact S&P

Yes, I agree with Brian. The car is not supposed to run rich, if your familiar with a scanner the cars blm should stay at 128 under all conditions except Highway Fuel Mode.
I would definitely call and complain to S&P for that. That is why I don't order custom chips, unless someone knows something I don't; custom chips get your car dialed in close, but not on the money.

One of my biggest loyalties is using GM sensors. Even though all of the auto parts stores have part listed does not mean they are right. I found this out with O2 sensors and knock sensors. Bad lesson.... car kept dieing with new knock sensor so i thought something else was wrong... almost sold my car till my buddy at the dealership said buy a GM sensor.... and it worked.... since then I have had no problems with my car... I have had it for 3 years..... You have to be picky about which cheap parts you buy...

Just an update. I pulled the fuel rail assembly to check for leaky injectors, and found one or two that are possibly leaking. When i pressurize the fuel system they leave a very small trace of wettness on a shop towel. So I ordered new Accels. I'll know by the end of the week if that was it or not.
