I have a question. I just got a new engine and th350 trann in the car, and i want to know what would cause the power to fall off after about5300 rpms. I havent taken it much past that because it seemed to stop pulling. The reason i ask is because the cam i have seems to be calibrated for much higher rpms, like 3-7k. What gives? Here are the specs...

4-bolt main block bored .030 over, decked .010
.010R and .010M cast crank
ARP rod bolts, rods resized
TRW forged flat-top pistons
MOLY rings
Michigan (sp?) bearings
LT-1 heads
Manely Valves 2.02-1.6
Hard ex seats
New pushrods
Elgin rollar tip rockers
Speed pro Hyd. Cam
302 degrees, 536 lift int, 536 lift Ex
Performer RPM intake
H. V. oil pump, steel rod. New pickup.
GM chrome valve covers and timing covers.
Everything new

it also has a b&m 2800 stall and edelbrock 600 electric choke carb in it.

any suggestions?
Chris

P.S., if nothing else, i will switch out the cam for something more streetable, but i kind of like the quirkyness it has now........

The factory GM ignition isnt good for anything over 5000 RPM.... you need to get an aftermarket coil that is made for higher RPM and higher voltage..... get better plug wires.... if you are using R45TS plugs then instead of gapping them at .045 gap them at .047 or .048 (it will help a little).... an after market ignition wouldnt be bad either Like the MSD 6-AL.... it has a built in rev limiter and you can also get a harness for it that lets you plug it right in to the GM harness.....

sorry for the confusion, but i do have an aftermarket ignition
it has an hei distributer and nrg sparkplugs, not the best, but not the worst. another person i talked to said that the timing might be too far advanced for those RPM's. Would that also be a cause?

If your timing was advanced too far you would be getting bad detonation which would set off your knock sensor.... what exactly do you have as far as your ignition system ?

There may be an air flow problem in conjunction with your ignition problem. Do the ignition first a 6AL or Jacobs setup is the answer. Other than tahe make sure your intake setup can flow enough air at that engine rpm.

There is an equation you can use.

RPMxCID/(12x12x12)=cfm needed for that particular rpm
this doesn't include the fuel factor you'll have to play with the jets

example: 6000rpmx350cid=2100000cubic in. / min
2100000/1750(cubic inch to cubic feet)= 1200cfm
required to feed your engine at that rpm

also check your plugs and plug wires. Ya never know it could be something simple. I also switched to an MSD external coil. MSD makes the kit and that solved my problem. Anyways good luck and get back to us!

do your valve springs match the cam?
