idling problem

hey, i used to idle at 550ish rpms and then not long ago it would idle there but seem to struggle and shutter then jusmp up to about 1000...now, it immediately idles at 1250 rpms which seems dangerously high...any idea on what to do? thanks

Is that in drive or neutral? What engine? If it's a TPI engine I would try cleaning the idle air control motor and the idle air passage, and make sure the iac is hooked up and working properly.

in neutral...im gonna clean and reset everything...i have a 305 tpi...thanks

I wouldn't worry too much about what it is in neutral, as long as it's around 500-600 in drive. Mine usually idles around 800 in neutral or park but sometimes after I've been driving it, especially if it is still cold, it will jump up to 1200-1300 as soon as I put it in park but then after a few seconds it will start to come back down to normal.
