I have an 87 formula 350 and i want to put headers on it, but the only headers that work with the smog pump(that i am aware of) are $320.00 made by edelbock. If i was to just drop the smog pump would it afffect my computer or would it be a better idea to just get the hedders with the air return lines on them and keep it?

SLP and Hooker make headers with the air tubes, and I'm sure there are others. If you take the smog pump out it won't hurt the computer any, I took mine out and it's fine. You might want to check to see what you can get away with on inspection though.

Do you have a serpentine belt? If so how did you get the belt to work after removing the pump? Mine is on the same side as the A/C and if I remove the smog pump the tensioner won't work or won't have anything to tension.

I have the serpentine system. You could remove it and just use a shorter belt but I've heard people say that the bracket will break without the support of the pump. I left my pump on for now but eventually I'm going to take it apart and gut it, and just have it as an idler, or maybe take it all out and just put the empty case back in and use a shorter belt.
I thought '88 was the first year for the serpentine belt(?)
Just FYI, the smog pump is only supposed to inject air into the manifolds during warm up in open loop, then it switches to injecting air into the cat, but since most modern cats don't require air injection, it's pretty much a useless system anyway.
