i have a 1984 trans am, but unfortunately its got the lg4 engine :( it actually seems to run pretty well, i know it only has 150 hp stock, but i was wondering since the cat is gutted and the smog equiptment disabled how much extra that would give it? any help would be appreciated , thanks.

Maybe 5-10 hp. Really not much. Esp since you don't have a lot to begin with, so those two things things aren't going to pull too much from it. You might try to get some better heads cheap off of another engine to raise the compression ratio, then start with the standard mods (carb, intake, exaust).

my guess would be:

you still have less then 150hp

since its a old engine and all :p

really though, other then a dyno, there is no way of knowing. i would say its low... remeber, the cat wouldnt add anything, since the cat wouldnt have been clogged when it was new and the hp rating was made. adn the smog equipment doesnt take THAT much power.... sorry.

i would build up a nice 350+ci motor and just swap em.

Your not gaining much by doing that. But if on a tight budget thats the best alternative to buying mods

Gutting the catalytic convertor actually causes turbulence in your exhaust which hurts you in the long run. If you are going to go without a cat then you need to get a "test pipe" to go in place of it, or get a high flow cat ( $150.00 ).....
