I mean most of those guys remove the baffles and you can hear them for blocks but a kid with a stereo or a loud car they'll pull over. What's the difference?

The difference is that the bikes are LOUD AS FU## from the factory. Harleys that have baffles removed changes tone and sound, doesnt increase sound like a car muffler. If the car/bike passess federal inspection and is DOT approved, then it hits the road. Same reason why 69 Camaro owners dont get bothered. A Civic doesnt come from the factory with a coffee can muffler and sound like a Craftsman convension parade. It does after someone makes it sound that way, then, its illegal. Hope i cleared it up.

bull
fucking
shit.
stock ones are downright quiet. owners make them that way.
same with the camaro.
anyhoo, bikes can be quiet if they have a proper exhaust... all you have to do is put it in a high gear and bearly crack the throttle.
ricers can be quiet, if they keep the RPMS low..
and people with annoying loud stereos can turn them down.
while everyone shouldnt get a ticket, everyone should have respect for others.... heh, just keep it quiet in neighborhoods, and in crowds and its cool...

Well, im no Harley expert by any means. Maybe some models are louder than others. My brothers was LOUD. He removed the baffles by punching them with a crowbar. It sounds different, but not louder. Im just talking from experience i know. But thats the way it works as far as federal regulations and DOT approval.

no
technically. he broke the law by taking out the baffles.
hell at bike week at myrtle beach and Daytona, they check some bikes to see if they have baffles... no baffles = ticket.

Ok, now you can tell all the Outlaw Biker Gangs to thank mrdude for their brand new 'noise' tickets since he filled the cops in...... I knew people removed the pipes or whatever to make them loud'er', but i thought they came loud as hell from the factory also.

I know a guy that bought a new 2002 Harley and he removed the Baffles in his and it was loud compared to what it sounded like before. Then he bought an aftermarket exhaust and put on it and it was loud too. I guess it all depends on what you call loud but I'm with Dude on this one.

*looks at the Eastcoast Ironhorse custom neo-chopper sitting out front*(damn i want that)
*looks at the sportster next to it*
*looks at the custom next to that*
*looks at his honda in the middle*
damn. :(
well, id have one if i had the money. i dont have the money, so i guess i'll just keep hanging out with them, riding for fun on what i can afford, and helping actually work on them.....
oh, and a dealership?! HA! i live close to 2 dealerships..... although one mostly sells parts and accessories...
mmk. let me try to explain this again.
from the factory, with the baffles at lower RPMs and certain RPM ranges, the baffles make it pretty damn quiet. now if you just wack the throttle all the way open, of COURSE its loud... Harley spends thousands designing it so that it can pass noise regulations and still have that loud Harley sound.
point is. if the biker is being overly loud, or causing a disturbance, he(or she) deserves a ticket if they cannot keep it down. all they have to do is stay out of the throttle.... if they cant keep it quiet for whatever reasons, oh well, they're going to bitch about you pigs anyway :lmao:
same rule applies to cars, booming stereos, and anything else...

they did give out tickets at myrtle beach. they stuck a stick up the pipes... if they didnt hit a baffle, they got a ticket.

All of the drivers operators can control the noise their vehicle makes if they want too. Either they can turn it down some, leave the factory exhaust on & alone, or simply not rev it up when the cops come by.
I can remember slipping an old 75 Ford I had into neutral when a cop was close.
Another that that I see, is that most of the ones that seem to get stopped are VERY LOUD, or they are running up a down the road in the same general area & the station is starting to get call about them.
Cell phones are great, sort of, but now everyone that sees something they don't like calls the police, & it its much at all the dispatcher has to give it out.

You are pretty clueless. I don't care if your dept. has a thousand Harleys and you live on top of the Harley dealer, it doesn't make you any smarter on the subject as you have already stated. Any Harley in the state that you work without a baffle in the exhaust is illegal. A good 50%+ of all Harleys in your state and everywhere are not using baffles.
It is like putting a loud exhaust on your F body or a system. It is to be seen, get attention and so on. One good thing about it on a motorcycle I can tell you first hand about. The majority of people driving do not pay attention, they do not see bikes coming nor do they cut a guy on a bike alittle slack. When they hear you whack the throttle, they wake up and pay attention :)
BTW, I live a few miles from a police station and my area has some cops so I know what I'm talking about.

Yeah but can't you buy a new Harley from the factory with different exhausts since Harley makes tons of optional stuff for their bikes? That would explain why some are louder than others.

No they come from the factory quiet i live about a half a hour from the factory where they are built and i know tons of people that have them. All of there bikes were quiet even the big ones. Yes somebody can buy a bike brand new and have it be loud that is because the dealership takes out the baffles.
I write Harleys all the time for loud exhaust. 99% of them are running straight pipes.

you mean quiet?
try this:
fix your muffler.
or for the "performance" option
get a muffler that flows well, not one thats made to sound loud

I have my stock mufflers
the only difference is I removed my 3 cats and manifold. and instead put a header on with 2 inch primes into a 2 1/2" coll and pre-silencer (a straight through mufflers front muffler) in there
everything else is stock
a rotary is not a a quit car if you do ANYTHING to the exhuast at all.
and it will be worse when I get some straight through mufflers for the rear. more for flow then for noise

yeah there is something wrong
the stock exhuast manifold is a big open box ( like a plenum) with two holes in it to keep the exhuast gas in there.
plus I took out the 3 cats on my car
the stock exhaust is VERY restrictive
you do anything to open it up and you are going to be loud
think it might have something to do with 299* adv duration for the exhuast port
but unlike a piston motor that exhaust port is fully open almost right from the start rather then opening slowly like a pistons motors valve does
