A friend and i were arguing at work today over this, and he seems to think that if a cop pulls you over due to old tags, that he can impound the car. I told him that its only a small fine and no points or anything serious will happen. How often do you guys pull people over once you see the old tags, and between me and my friend who is right?
Actually, he's partially correct. Here in California, if your tags are more than six(correct me I'm wrong on the number) months old, they can impound your car.
Blue_Chameleon and I were just talking about this. :)

I pull people over all the time for expired tags. Usually, for the most part, people just forget to put the new sticker over the old one. However, once their registration is expired and it is over 6 months, you can say bye-bye to your car for a while.
And just for the sake of being on the tow subject, if you are an unlicensed driver, your car gets towed for 30 days.

I usually give about 30 days for an expired tag before I ticket, & I have the option of impounding the car after it is out 90 days. If we impound, we also generally place a "hold" on the car so that it cannot be released to owner until the tags are caught up.
Personally, keeping your tags up in my opinion, is an easy way to save yourself some money!
