View Full Version : Do cops round up tickets?

To make a long story short: busted today for, the officer said, doing 40 in a 25. Now this is down a hill mind you in a park with brakes keeping speed(ing) in check. The minute I saw him I knew I was busted because I, like everyone, speed down that hill.
I checked my speedo as I hit the brakes to slow down fast and it read just under 35. He was really nice when talking to me and that makes me wonder. Cops are never nice when pulling over a vicious young lawbreaker like myself for speeding. Even if the speedometer was wrong, why would it be such a even number? 37 yes, 38, 39, 41 but 40 on the dot?

I dont know about your area but the cops I have spoken with on a personal level do not round up in fact they tend to round down. only two cops that I know of give you what the gun said you were going and that is b/c they just want to try to be fare and not prejudice against any race or sex.
Matt
By the way I am a criminal justice major and speak with the sheriff's, city cops, and state boy's at least once a week as a part of class or just to play nice with the guys who might be the next one to pull me over, :D

I don't know of anyone that ever rounds up, & in my opinion would be just plain wrong for lots of reasons. I do know officers that will round down & save the driver a few bucks on the ticket, but I have noted that over the years, many of the ones that did this very thing, ended up in court, testifying on the ticket & also having to explain the their "reasoning" for writing down a different speed than the radar indicated.
I, for one have never done this as the court clerk indicated to me that she believes the judge does not like this practice anymore than he likes to see derogatory remarks noted on the ticket about the driver.
If I get one running 41 mph in a 25 mph zone, but only get it locked at 40 in the 25, I write the 40, as that is what is displayed if the driver happens to ask to see the radar. Now, many people think we are required to show the radar, but that is not true (at least here), & I am not actually required to lock the speed in. However, I have found it to be a courtesy on my part, & if it keeps me out of court, that's great. I have nothing to hide, anyway!

Thanks for the input, but it would lead me to believe that I was doing over 40 and he rounded it down to help me. I just can't believe that. If you knew this hill you would know that only insane person would do over 40 on it. So I am insane or have a really off speedometer... ?

The guys I know that round down, usually tell them so they realize they may be saving a few bucks. As to the speedo, I was told by a trooper once, years ago that each size different taller or shorter on the tires can throw the speedo off 3-4 mph. I do not know how true this is, but if the transmission or rear end gears have been changed it should also contribute (in my opinion).

Its not my camaro its a front wheel drive winter beater. The tires and wheels are also correct.

I round down.
For the most part, I usually tell them that I paced them at a certain speed and they generally admit to it and apoligize. One guy was paced driving 50+ on a 25. I pulled him over and I told him I paced him at 50mph. He constantly apoligized hoping to get out of a ticket...
...he got one anyway.

Kamaro, not to be an ass but they can do anything, maybe their not supposed to but if a cop doesnt have to show the driver the radar reading then they could write a ticket for anything they wanted. Morals is a different thing.
as for the asking to see the gun, unless my spedo and the speed the cop says i was donig are way off, like 10-15+ mph i wouldnt even think of asking, most people know how fast they are going within 5 mph.
comming from experience i know how fast i have been going every time ive been pulled. I have actually been stopped waiting for the cop to come before he has even turned around before. I passed him going the other way and saw brake lights so i just stopped, i knew i was screwed. he was cool and let me go.

Kman makes a point. Coming down that hill, its on a curve. I would be crazy to go down at 40 mph or more. (Considering the end of the hill, near where he had the trap, was near a stop light) I have really been trying to obey the law and avoid speeding tickets. I rarely go over 10+ the speed limit, despite getting blown by like I was standing still. Edit: On the highway, not the average street...
Oh well, you cant win untill you have some grey in the hair. (Then for some reason you get let off more) So I'll just keep speeding like the rest and **** it. Even the fine is only $125. I am currently unemployed and I still laugh at that fine. (And snub my nose in general at the entire Parma police dept)
I don't round at all. What's on the radar gun is what you're written for.
